Reading the options list for this 1960 Porsche 356 Cabriolet may make your mouth water, if you’re an aircooled fanatic. The factory hardtop is a nice bonus as well, and a desirable feature we rarely see. This one is made all the more special thanks to being spec’d with the rare 80-liter GT gas tank, an optional feature not chosen by many 356 shoppers of the day. Find this interesting cabriolet here on eBay with bidding over $45K and the reserve unmet.
More about the larger gas tank: this was standard fare on the extremely desirable 356 Carrera GT, but was made optional across the entire range. Very few shoppers checked that box, which isn’t surprising given how hard it likely was to make shoppers excited about a fuel tank. But for competitive events or long-distance rallies, a larger tank was a desirable upgrade. It remains a hot commodity today, and some vendors have even made a replica tank for over $3K apiece – if you can even find one of the replicas. A Kardex is included confirming matching numbers.
The seller notes several other factory options were added to this 356 when new, including: electric antennae; 80 liter GT gas tank; two armrest leatherette; inside mirror switch;
chromed signal ring at steering wheel; electric watch; rear wheel stabilizer; extra light switch; longer steering column; and an optional key lock on the shifter. The floors look impressively sound (almost too good to be true), which begs the question as to whether they were done previously or have just survived incredibly well.
The seller notes the engine did run when the 356 was parked 10 years ago – and is quite confident it will fire again (it does turn freely). The range of features and high levels of originality certainly set this one apart, and I can imagine factory options like the hard top and larger GT fuel tank rarely come up for grabs. The body is certainly tired and the interior needs reassembly, but these are minor quibbles for such an intriguing example. Bidding is likely far from over, and I’m betting it clears $60K easily.
Please enough vw looking Porsche’s on here!
We get it someone(flip boy) found a treasure and wants more money
Please similar to Monty python throw out your dead Porsche’s and get it over with!
I do not like green porches and spam not on a boat or goat or roof or eBay 🤦♂️🤦♂️👀😳
If the seller is “quite confident it will fire again” then why not make it a runner before selling?
Hmm another one ….
Anyone know imported production numbers in US ?
I guess we can start counting here as they do keep showing up to jump on the cash train 🚂
There’s enough bondo in the rear quarters to alter the weight distribution.
Thinking out loud. Why do I like this one so much? Must be the big tires.
Does anyone know why every 365 ever made is now being sold?
Other factory options, extra light switch, must be a Lucas thing?
Greetings All,
Hey, leiniedude, you have it somewhat wrong. The switches on Lucas were STOCK.
The “working” ones were optional.
Okay, lets think now kiddies, what would you rather have for 60K? A rusty non running 60 year old piece of automotive drivel or a trip around the world with your special lady? What would leave more memories? In the end, when the undertaker closes the lid, what would have given us more pleasure? That bondo filled contraption with the mouse urine odor and spider webs can not hold you close at night. We all have the right to make our own choices, I know what mine would be.
I guess if $60,000 is all there is in the jar, this isn’t the car for you, but I can tell you the buyer of this car, has a deeper jar.
Ahh yes, the foolishness of the elite. I know that if it were me taking money from such a rich fool, I wouldn’t feel a tad guilty, but how do you feel when you pawn this off on some equally foolish yet not nearly as cash gifted soul? After all, we all can’t have our trust fund lawyers handy with grandpas check book. Working at McDonalds might not be nearly as lucrative, but I bet you would sleep better at night.
Billy007- The “Working Class Hero” trope gets old pretty fast. You seem to have an ax to grind with how people choose to spend their money. It’s none of our business. Enjoy the cars and chill.
I think Billy is out of his depth here, my buyers are not all rich and are rarely fools. They are normally well informed enthusiasts who know what they want and are extremely grateful that I went to the dark corners of the world to find it for them.
Adam- I’d like to hear your opinion on why it seems as if 356’s are flooding the market now. As with most things I comment on, I approach from a position of ignorance, but I don’t seem to remember ever seeing this many of that model for sale at one time. Thanks.
@Pa Tina
More are hitting the market because the prices are up. Many of these cars are known, but the owner won’t sell or wants too much money. Well, when prices go up, up, up, suddenly the owner’s high price is ok to swallow, so you buy. I know I’ve gone through my black book over the last few years and called a lot of guys, “You still have that car?”
To heck with the 356 and a trip with the Old Battle Ax! I’ll take the 1967 Camaro in Yonkers NY..
I agree with Billy. The old car hobby has gotten out of hand. All of this for profit stuff has ruined it. I also agree with Adam when he says that people should be able to spend their money as they see fit, of course, but are there not better ways to spend that money? I will never understand the lure of a car like this, at least for not this kind of asking price. A new car is a lot lot better to drive and loads cheaper too, so for me, that’s is what I do. Then again, if people have the money, it should be their choice, but then again, only if they came about that money in a morally upright fashion so they can meet their maker with a clear conscience. Hate to be at the gates of Heaven and Saint Peter looks you in the eye and starts to ask how you made the world a better place and all you can say is that you sold old cars to rich people who spent their money on them versus caring for others in true need.
If it makes you feel better, on my day off I teach art at my kid’s schools, 2nd and 4th grade. So you can do both, save cars and help kids.
What I do with cars is simple, I normally find them in the hands of guys who have had them for decades, and convince them to sell, the cars then go from rusting away to being restored. Every time I drive my Porsche I get nothing but waves and smiles from people, so another Porsche saved does make the world a better place. Want to know more about what I do, read this article.

Heavy thoughts dude. I just flashed back to my college dorm circa 1974. Road trip!
I consider your idea of morality different.. you assume a moral high ground to “finance” a new car you can’t afford to purchase out right, at a daily deprecation that renders your “new” car near worthless at the point of your last payment. Not a pinnacle example of “moral” Stewartship I’m my option… on the contrary, the current owner of this car paid extremely fair money to someone with the opportunity to better themselves. Hes paying 4-5 craftsman to currently restore the car, supporting several parts vendors ( including ADAM) as well as dealership employees in the process. Over and above all the people earning a living on this unethical use of resources the cars will value will far exceed the investment. Moral of the story, just because you don’t have the drive, fortatude, or foresight for and investment like this dont feel the need to pull your hands out of your pockets to point a “moral” finger at someone that’s earned it.
replacement floor pan and paint by latex , pretty sad state its in , hopefully some one has $$$ enough to save it , still a rare bird !
My 356 nor any of my friends 356’s are for sale. So ALL of them are not for sale. It’s a shame some of us can’t enjoy reading about a Porsche on barn finds with out all the negativity. I don’t make negative comments about all the corvettes listed. Even if I think they are in poor shape or just plain over priced.
We get it you only like American cars.
Just let the rest of us enjoy all the cars without all the negative comments.
having several porches myself, I can say that the bathtub 356 was a nice car, but one I never considered for myself… too slow and too much of a “classic” look, way underpowered…. unless you got into the multi cam/valve models… those I liked! the 356 was a supercar if you got the right one… otherwise they were bathtub underpowered dogs. it takes a special type of person to want a 356, hate to be in one and get smoked by a performance 914l
Come on people. I bet every one of us, if we found one sitting for a real cheap price knowing we could re sale it quickly and huge profit we would do it as well. Unless we wanted to keep it. I really get tired of always bashing the sellers on their cars. If you can’t afford it then just admire it and be happy for the seller and equally the buyer. If they can afford to buy it , they deserve it. Enjoy this web sight and quit bashing others. There is a thrill about finding, buying then selling something. Just like fishing and catching the big one!!!
