Big Tonka Truck: 1968 Dodge D100 Stepside

Metal toy trucks with the oval Tonka sticker on each door were a part of my childhood. They were solid, well-built, and if these rugged toys could survive the torture test twin brother Don and I gave them in the sandbox or dirt pile (we weren’t nicknamed “The Wrecking Crew” for nothing), then they could withstand anything. Here’s a large version of a Tonka stepside pickup truck with the familiar oval Tonka on each door that’s for sale here on craigslist. This 1968 Dodge D100 is currently in Lansing, NC with an asking price of $14,995.

Out of the gate, the seller states in all caps: IGNORE THE DATES ON THE PICTURES, I TOOK THEM FRIDAY, DEC 9, 2022.  Based on the photos provided, I don’t see any major body concerns or spot any rust. The seller shares that he’s owned it for three years, it’s been his daily driver in nice weather, and that it needs nothing. Everything supposedly works: lights, gauges, wiper, heater, and the windows go up and down with no issues. The D100 was painted in its original white several years before the current seller bought it with the floor pans being patched. The truck also has its original windshield that has some fogging around the edges. The mag wheels compliment the gray bumpers and grill and look pretty cool, and the four original stock wheels with dog dish hubcaps are included in the deal.

The seller tells us that over the past three years, he has replaced the master cylinder and battery and added a tach, a second horn, a 12 v outlet, map light, and a new CD stereo with four speakers. There’s also a console (that’s removable), and in the bed, you’ll see an attractive wooden bed floor, oak side boards, and a wooden tool box.

I’m a big fan of the spartan, no-nonsense interiors of 50’s and 60’s pickups and this basic black and white Dodge doesn’t disappoint. The pleated black bench seat looks great as does the steering wheel, but that’s the main reason it’s being sold. The seller shares that he’s getting older and the manual steering is too heavy for his arms and shoulders.

Under the hood is the standard workhorse, the base, bulletproof Chrysler 225 Slant-6 (I had a 225 in a Valiant Scamp, so I can vouch for its toughness.), that’s paired with a three-on-the-tree manual transmission. The seller claims the truck burns no oil and he’s been getting 18-20 mpg running around Ashe County, NC. The tires look good and have 5,000 miles on them. It’s nice to turn the spotlight on Dodge and other makes of pickup trucks every once in a while. This one looks like it would be at home in a garage, a cars and coffee get-together, or in a really, really big sandbox. What do you think?

Fortunately it’s not a shovelhead, you’d be working on it during the week to just ride on the weekends it needed a tach so you didn’t over rev it to blow it up..lol

Early ’60s Tonka wrecker that most collectors refer to as a Dodge. Tonka made several other white trucks, for example a car carrier and a few with just white cabs like their stake body truck.

It’s still posted on our local craigslist for the same price.
They’ve posted it six times in the last month.

I love it and I love trucks and I think this Dodge could really be a great truck. They just seem so rare, the seller of this truck thinks so too, considering his asking price. Call me stupid but compared to all the other prices out there, I think I would take a look, and might buy it

I just sold my last one. It was a really nice 70 from Nevada. I see another one around,a styleside short bed, I may check on it.
