Black Beauty: 25k Mile 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Located in Overland Park, Kansas, and listed for sale here on craigslist is this 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. It is offered for sale with a clean title, and the seller has set the price for it at $10,900.

In anyone’s book black is a brave color to paint a car. While they invariably look really attractive it is also a color that reveals any obvious problems. This Camaro isn’t perfect as this shot shows. It sports quite a sizeable mark in the front fender. Having said that, it is repairable. Otherwise the body seems to be in really good order. This seller claims that the car has only traveled 25,000 miles, but as with any claim like this I hope that the seller has documentation to back this up.

It appears that this Camaro is currently residing in a storage facility, but I think that it has spent some time in a fairly dusty environment. This photo shows a fair amount of dirt around the door frame, and the engine bay gives the same indication. This car features custom leather upholstery. This can be both a blessing and a curse. The seller states that there are some marks on the seats, but he doesn’t indicate whether these can be fixed or if a re-cover is going to be in order. Unfortunately there is little that we can tell about the condition of the dash or plastic from the supplied shots.

The rear seat certainly appears to be in good condition. The seats, carpet and plastic trim all appear nice, with no obvious issues. I can see a mark on the front passenger seat, but can’t tell whether it is something on the seat or a scrape on the leather. Either should be able to be fixed by a competent trimmer. There is also noticeable wear on the edge of the center console which indicates that the side bolster on the driver’s seat may have been chafing against the plastic. This may account for the marks that the seller is referring to.

Under the hood is the tuned-port 350ci engine which produced 245hp. It would be backed by the Turbo-Hydramatic 4-speed automatic transmission. The power is then fed on this car to a Posi rear end. The seller states that the car runs and drives well, and that there have been some additional chrome pieces added to the engine bay. As previously stated, I believe that this Camaro has lived in a dusty environment judging by the amount of dust that is present under the hood. If this is the case then it would be interesting to know whether items such as the air filter have been changed regularly. The seller has also just fitted this Camaro with new tires.

This Z28 is probably priced in about the right region for a car in this condition. It is always debatable whether the custom additions such as the leather upholstery are beneficial to a car like this, or whether this lack of originality damages resale value. There are a few things that need to be addressed to return it to an immaculate condition, but there would be no problems with driving it exactly as it stands.

I could never get past the rear spoiler on these, otherwise a nice looking car.
But shiny paint aside, the overall condition doesn’t seem to compliment the claimed mileage.

I can tell you living close to the location of this car that with our dry summers dust is everywhere. Our Mustang sits in a climate controlled garage but unless I keep the car cover on it dust gets on it even the interior. Our home with the A/C on still gets dusty it’s a fact of life here. Black like our Mustang is a beast to keep clean but when it is there is no comparison to any other color on a car. Not a Chevy guy but I like this car even with it’s flaws.

I currently have a 1991 RS and I have owned the car for over 20 years. The rims look great but that engine bay looks like it has 4 times the advertised mileage on it. That car minus the dust should look a lot nicer than that. Why would you need to change the seats interior as well with that low of miles as well? This is my favorite decade of Camaros that’s why I have owned 4 of these I think style wise they have aged well.

last of the 3rd gens. memory is that for the 91-92 models body panel attachment was augmented with adhesive as the tolerances in the molds used to create them had increased from wear to the point of allowing excess movement once installed.

as any owner of the older 3rd gen F-bodies can report, creaks, groans, squeaks were part of the soundtrack even when new. supposedly the noises were reduced & the cars felt tighter for the last two years.

marketing hype to combat bad reputation, wishful thinking or fact? i’ve not been in one to know.

regardless, these are the ones i’d want. more “mature” & flowing styling, no more silly decals, improved interior, especially when optioned with leather like this one is.

unlikely that a 1LE optioned-Z would show up as they only made about 500, but that’s the hot setup with Corvette front brakes & horsepower. this one likely has the lesser 230hp 5.7 in it.

price seems a bit high given the body damage even if the mileage checks out.

      You’re right about everything except it’s does have the 245 hp 5.7. 1LEs didn’t see any horsepower increase, it’s just a standard L-98 5.7 or LB-9(I think)5.0.

What are those marks on the hood and elsewhere- was it attacked by a squirrel with a grudge? The white mark on the fender might actually “buff out”.

The car appears to have only normal dust and dirt buildup associated with storage. The writer must not have much experience with stored cars. One would have to have more detailed photos of cracks and crevices to figure out if it was yee hawed down gravel roads. I doubt it though. Looks like a nice car that got in a small accident and is priced a bit high unless you can do your own body work. Maybe they should have detailed it better before photos to get rid of the dust?

This is a nice Z/28, but I don’t think the custom interior is a good selling point. I own a 77K mile white ’91 Z/28 305 TPI engine with T5 transmission and 3:42 rear axle that is bone stock except for cat-back exhaust system and rear panhard bar. It’s a hoot to drive. I’m not sure what Chevrolet engineers were thinking with that Ferrari F40 rear wing though, but it is a pain because anytime I glance over my right shoulder, I instinctively think there is a vehicle behind me.

This is a nice looking ’91 Z/28. While I’m not sure if the custom interior helps with the sale, I can say that the factory seats in my 77K mile ’91 Z/28 have minimal foam padding so these are probably more comfortable.

I’m not sure what the Chevrolet engineers were thinking with the Ferrari (seems sacrilegious to mention Chevrolet and Ferrari in the same sentence) F40 style rear wing. What I do know is it’s a real pita whenever I’m driving and look over my right shoulder and instinctively think there is a vehicle right on me.
