Can You Find A Better: 1960 MGA 1600

1960 MGA 1600 Roadster

I think Jim S was trying to tell us something when he shared this MGA with us, seeing as it’s right here in Boise, Idaho. We actually happen to know Steve, the seller, and have been to his shop where it is currently located at. As much as we would love to have this roadster, we just picked up a new project, so we are going to have to pass on this one. Steve listed this car for a friend, who hopes to get $8,500 for it here on eBay. It needs a lot of work, but might be a good buy if it’s solid. I’m curious to see what MGA roadsters are going for these days, so let’s see if you can find a better one for $8,500 or less! Good luck and like always, please post your links in the comments!

This car looks very good to me. Well worth the price.
The MGA is prettier than a TR3 which looks good crazy.
I’d love to have both, so me and the wife to take a mountain outing.
Anybody driven both and know the difference in performance?

I have driven both cars. Hands down the TRs are better built. I also think they out perform the MGs and better looking to boot.

Yup, but a long time ago. The Ferguson based tractor motor gives the TR3 the advantage in grunt and for my money it’s tougher and looks it, But no question the MGA wins the beauty contest. I was always TR3 guy but these days, must admit to admiration for pure clean lines of the A.

$11,500 and it looks excellent to me.

Having driven both, I’d say the Triumph has a more raw edge to it — more apt to get the tail end out, more grunt from a stop, more weather in the cockpit, a little noiser and a harsher ride.
The MGA is great for sweeping turns and long Sunday drives. Just a little more civilized, assuming your idea of civilization includes side-screens and a rag-and-sticks top.
These days I would only buy either of them from a dry climate state. Would be fun to build an MGA coupe with a Buick 215 V8 and a Tremec 5-speed.

Would also note that this is a 1600, which gets you an engine with a little more torque, and 20th-century brakes. Could do without wire wheels, myself.

Looks fairly complete. I would love to know what the wood floor is like. ??? And if the frame is solid or holy.
Funny how somebody created custom door panels w speaker cavities.
Moss sells all the replacement interior parts and you can buy carpet and upholstery kits or even send those seats in and trade them out for newly reupholstered seats.
That the engine is broken down would worry me. Who knows if all the parts are there.
I’m unclear if there is a real dash board behind that fake wood one.
    The car does look solid.
Before I would buy this – I would go look at it and bring a Moss catalog and start adding up the cost of all the parts you will need.
Presume those Lunas British switches need to be rebuilt or replaced.
    Bumper is easy to find.
Check the rockers and the front apron.
The original wheels are painted – not chromed. You can get them bead blasted and repainted.
    Good luck!
