This 1977 Porsche 924 is a rare Martini World Championship edition, and while it’s looking a bit tired, the price also seems right at $2,795 or best offer. These cars had special graphics, interior and some other cosmetic tweaks, along with being produced in limited numbers. Find this one here on eBay with three days left in the listing and located in Richmond, Virginia.
I’ve seen exactly one each of the Championship and Sebring editions in local junkyards. That’s the trouble with them: rare, sure, but not worth it to buy as an investment. Of course, that’s not why I’d acquire one anyway. I dig the Martini edition aside from those horrid color-coded wheels, which seemed to find their way onto 924s in droves. The painter’s tape around the hatch is likely indicative of a leak. Also, the seller apparently has a second Martini car in his stash.
I always loved the orange/red carpets found in the Martini cars, although the rest of the interior is a bit of a let-down compared to the Sebring edition. That car had a sweet tartan cloth interior that put the standard buckets-with-red-inserts to shame as found in the Martini cars. As you can see, this unique interior will need the seats reupholstered in their original pattern with blue piping. The radio has been yanked but the three-pod gauge cluster remains in the center stack.
The good news about the seats? The original upholstery pattern is still available via a specialists’ shop in Europe. The engine was your run-of-the-mill 2.0L inline-four, and it may have some vacuum or idle issues due to the painter’s tape on the intake. The seller notes it was recently pulled out of long-term storage, and hasn’t run in many years. While these are undeniably cool, I’d pick up a 924S before I’d go for one of these special editions – unless it was a Sebring.
That’s duct tape on the hatch, painters tape on the plenum. I’d run from this one.
The 924, for those who want the performance of van without practicallity.
Porsche at the right price for once. Yeah the tape is awesome. Once that pipe starts leaking either replace or tape. Or it won’t idle worth a poop. This is great car for a new driver. Looks cool, meh performance. When it jumps a curb no tears….
I always looked down on 924’s but did find the limited editions interesting.
The 944 is such a nicer car for not a lot more money so I skipped the 924 back in the day.
Having said that I would love a 924 Le Mans. Check this one out http://www.gmundcars.com/cars/5103/Porsche_924s_Le_Mans
I have heard that Porsche is the sole source for both tapes and it is 950 Euros a roll.
Martini & Russti
Some Porsche sellers will tell you it’s not rust. It’s just an “issue”. No worries, there is probably a special tape for that.
I need a drink.
Plus 1 on a 924S as it had a 944 drive train. I find it interesting that the seats have deteriorated so badly while the dash looks good, usually the dash is a cracked mess from the sun. Doing that interior properly along with a quality repaint will make this a costly 924. A period correct Blaupunkt will cost you big bucks too as the 911 nuts search these out for restorations. Chances are it’s pretty tired overall at 117,xxx miles and will need lots of TLC (totally lost cash). I’m a Porsche 924/944 guy and like to see them saved but you have to call them as you see ’em. This will be a labor of love for sure at this point in the market.
I bought this car in May 2018 and have restored it to original condition.
Nice one, love to see it finished if you have pics.
I have a 1977 Porsche 924 available for someone. It has a big V dent from the front of the roof to the back of the roof. The car is complete, the interior is shot, this is a possible restoration project or a great parts car for someone. $1000.00 and she is all yours. Metal Magic Mike (520) 420 4078
