Cheap 1965 Ferrari 275 Chassis!

ferrari-275-frame

Perhaps you have heard the story about the man who scored a multi-million dollar Ferrari frame on eBay for next to nothing? Well, this may not be as exciting as that tall tale, but if it’s legit, this could still be a great find for an aficionado. The seller claims that this frame belongs to a 275 and that the sale includes a title. Obviously, it’s going to take a lot to get from here to there, but it’s fun to dream. If you can’t picture it, just think of the most beautiful car you have ever seen and add a V12 out front… It’s located in Belgium and the seller has it listed here on eBay where bidding is up to $2k with no reserve!

Not that unusual as they are right next to each other. I have a German friend who lives in southern Germany and his farm and shop are in Austria.

Belgium and France are next to each other, and are both part of the EU. French is spoken in both countries. I see nothing strange about this ad and no obvious reason why there would be any problem with the purchase or reason for court proceedings.

That other story wasn’t a tall tale. That was the real deal. Tom Shaughnessy was smart enough to figure it out.

You’re right. It was a true tale even though it’s hard to imagine.

Indeed it SHOULD be legit. A friend of mine just did a deal with this seller and let’s just say it didn’t turn out as planned once the funds were sent… Too slick to go after.

I suggest you research the sellers “reputation” and form your own opinion about this “find”. Caveat emptor!

This is nothing like the Tom Shaughnessy find. His was a rare racing chassis that had a lot of orignal pieces and would be a very simple car to recreate. A 275 while a very expensive car in its own right today, is very complicated. Starting with an orignal frame would lessen the restoration cost little over simply building one new. The title is an interesting twist. Tom’s car has some incredible documented racing history. I would think if this 275 had interesting provonaunce it would have been stated in the ad. My buddy tried to do a body off restoration on his 1966 330GT only to find the body is built into the frame to the extent it really isn’t removable. I would suspect this might be the same.

Tom didn’t figure it out. He paid the guy who figured it out! It was on ebay. It was a Devin body on a Ferrari chassis.

The Ferrari chassis VIN 202/A from Tom Cotter’s book was a very rare early Ferrari model, and it had some running gear. The even VIN says that it was a competition model. It would be well worth building a replacement body, etc, for it.

This Ferrari 275 tube chassis, if it is actually an original Ferrari piece, has far less value. I think it would only be worth buying if you had a way to do something useful with it—-other than hanging it on your garage wall for display.

I doubt there are many people who could make good use of this tube chassis, since even if it has a genuine Ferrari VIN stamped on it (IIRC, usually on the left front rail) there would be endless stories connected to its use. And since tube frames aren’t too difficult to repair by cutting out bad tubes and welding in new ones, it’s hard to see how this chassis would be very valuable for parts. And IIRC Ferrari sourced its 1960s tube chassis from an outside contractor, so I think this 275 chassis wasn’t even made in the Ferrari factory.

Then there’s the fact that most Ferrari 275s have been found if lost, and restored since they are among the most desirable Ferraris of the 1960s. Maybe there’s a complete Ferrari 275 minus the tube chassis sitting around in someone’s garage, but I doubt it. With bidding only to $2K so far it looks like there isn’t much demand.

I checked the description on Ebay. This is the first one I’ve ever seen but it’s a Ferrari frame with leather trim………………..

I know “nuthing” (as Schultz would say on Hogan’s Heros) about Ferraris except what information you gracious and knowledgeable Barn Find members share. The Seller’s last couple of eBay transactions don’t involve vehicles and I am always leery of private listings.
@Insider-would you please share any general details you can regarding your friend’s less than pleasant experience with this Seller?
