We would all like to have a Cobra or an SSP but this humble LX might be perfect if you’re looking for a more affordable fox body option. Sure, the fou-banger and automatic arent exciting but this could be the perfect blank canvas for your monster V8 build. Or you could even drive it around just the way it is. It’s located in Owings Mills, Maryland, and is listed here on eBay with no reserve and bidding currently at $2,600!
Things look pretty boring in there but it does appear to be clean. I think this could be the perfect junkyard project – meaning it’s the perfect car to have if you like to make trips to your pick ‘n pull. Josh and I love to go junkyard hopping and there are always a few fox bodies around where we live. I would start watching for some Recaros and maybe a five-speed to liven things up a bit in here.
For some strange reason, the seller didn’t include any photos of the engine bay. Perhaps they figured there wasn’t anything in there worth getting too excited about. When people buy a four or six-cylinder Mustang, they always wonder what things might have been like if they had sprung for the V8 instead. Then again, the four-banger was good for 100 horsepower by the time this car came out. This was the last of the third-gen Mustang so it benefits from all the updates made along the way.
The hatchback may make hauling things easier but the notchback is the one you want if you want to go fast. It’s 100 pounds lighter and you’re less likely to have the trunk flip open during a drag race! Not that this car is going to win any drag races anytime soon. The first order of business here would be to lose those rims and to find some lower body molding. After that, you could maintain and drive it or you could start building a V8 for a swap. Which route would you take?
Pop in a 351 Windsor and a TKO 600 and do what Ford should have done before the 1995 Cobra R
Did Motorweek test this car back in 1993? This will be turned into a drag car lickety split! Most likely LS powered!
Not even a 5 speed will liven up that 4, believe me. There was no middle ground with these, either flea bag slow 4 or the hot 5.0, even the automatic 5.0 could handle itself. Stroker motor, 5 speed, gearing for whatever purpose the car will serve….that’s the only attraction, I’ve seen 460’s crammed in these.
Spot-on. I was always amazed by the “all or nothing” nature of the later Fox Mustangs, especially considering the choices offered earlier in the 80s (though the I6s were underwhelming, to).
I guess Ford brought the LX 5.0 price down enough that they thought they didn’t need a ‘tweener (?).
I agree with Jesse 100%, lose those rims!!
My 90 Mustang lx turbo swap is lively enough for a 4 banger, and for the era of engine. I believe they were making 155 hp plus depending on the year. My turbo is out of a 84Turbo Coupe.
SOLD for $3,750.
