Cheap Movie Star: 1961 Dodge D100 Panel

61 dodge panel 1

Panel trucks are always a favorite whether they are original or restored. This Dodge D100 Panel Truck isn’t the most common of the panel trucks, but it has a great look and cool styling. This specific Dodge is a movie star having appeared in the 1989 movie “Waiting for the Light”. It is not immediately clear how much screen time this truck received, but the seller does have some paper work validating its movie appearance. With an asking price of $6,850 we are intrigued with the truck more than its movie career. Find it here on craigslist out of Seattle, Washington.

The interior and exterior have good bones, if you will, but the interior looks a little rough to say the least. Some time and tlc would certainly help, although different seat covers would do wonders as well. This truck is slant 6 powered with a “three on the tree.”  The body looks pretty straight and doesn’t have any major apparent rust. One of the rear windows is cracked, and there is a dent in the passenger door, but otherwise the body isn’t too bad. The paint could use some help, but this trucks looks like a simple driver. Someone could easily bring this truck up a notch or two with some cleaning and organizing.

This panel truck seems like a reasonable deal even without its movie appearance back in 1989. Panel trucks seem to have an endless amount of versatility, and usefulness with their large open storage area. What would you do with this movie star Dodge D100?

Well, 1st of all, it’s a 1960. I don’t think the slant 6 was offered in 1960, only the flathead 6 and the 318 V-8. I always thought Dodge had the nicest styling of all the panel trucks. I’d leave it the way it is. Be a great hauler, just not too fast.

Pretty sure ’60 was the first year for the slant 6. But are the hubcaps correct?

Hi Rick, according to Allpar, 1961 was the 1st year for the slant 6 in trucks. (Valiant’s had slant 6’s in 1960) Matter of fact, the 1960’s were carry overs, as the new ’61’s were already being planned.

With no inside, engine, or underneath pics it’s somewhat of a crap-shoot but I love the patina. Would think about wider steel wheels with the original hubcaps and an updated drivetrain (maybe jack the body up and put a late model frame underneath?) but leave the looks. Would be a fun truck to actually use and take to shows.

I see this truck as a great tailgating vehicle for ball games baseball/football. TLC the interior and make sure it’s safe/reliable then add a kegger machine ( Have One In The Garage ) with a 42″ flat screen / smoky joe grill and your set to go. If it get’s a scratch who cares just don’t drink & drive bring a designated driver.

I agree with Howard in that it’s a 1960. However Dodge did slide some less common products over from one year to the next in sort of a transitional move. If that IS the case then I can understand the slant-six being in there. Otherwise I’d expect to see a flathead. As far as the truck itself is concerned, clean it up and use it. It would be a great gopher truck. Great for taking wares to the local swap meet. Restoration can come later….

I restored one of these years ago in my shop. It was a four wheel drive with a 318 and a shaft driven 16k lb winch. If I remember it also came factory with a 3″ lift kit which made it an incredible truck.
