Classic Project: 1953 MG TD

When I think of the quintessential British sports car, the MG T-Series is often the first car that comes to mind. Their styling is iconic, the mechanics are robust, and the driving experience is uniquely British. With a little over 29k TDs having been built, you’d think you would see more of these on the road, but a lot can happen in 70 years. In the case of this example, it would seem it’s been parked since 1963 after a restoration was started and never completed. It’s still waiting to be finished by its next owner so it can be returned to the road, where it belongs. You can find this project here on eBay in Red Oak, Iowa with a current bid of $2,025.

Power is provided by the XPAG 1250 cc inline-four, which is rated at 54 horsepower. While not terribly powerful or even very quick, this combination proved to be a hit with the American market. The car’s low weight and agile handling more than makeup for any shortcomings of the engine. There’s no word on the condition of this car’s engine, but chances are it will run with minimal work.

We don’t get a great look at the interior, since it’s filled with parts. You can see that the dash is complete, but covered in dust. Hopefully, all the needed parts to make this car whole is present, but parts are readily available to restore the car to like new condition. With any luck, the original upholstery isn’t damaged, as there’s nothing cooler than aged leather.

I’d recommend inspecting this one in person before bidding, but if it stays low, it might just be worth taking a gamble on it. These are basic cars, so restoring it is a task just about anyone can take on. And in the end, you’ll have a truly iconic sports car to drive and enjoy!

Rough and dirty. Sure wouldn’t buy this one for any more than what’s bid now and for sure not without an underside look. Sagging left door tells me there’s rust there which will also require replacing the wood behind the metal.

It’s a BARN FIND. It’s not Carvana twinkletoes. At $4k it’s a perfect project as is. Anything more it would need to have no rust and a guarantee all the parts are present. If I have a 12-14 year old kid interested in cars, here’s the one you work on together. Parts everywhere, doesn’t take up tons of space, fun when done without being a gas hog speeding incident guaranteed to get your kid in trouble.

This was the first plastic car model I assembled as a kid (12 years old). I bought a second kit so the cars could serve as book ends (I mounted them on a couple of wooden slats). I was always a reader, but I sure liked kit building too.

I had some play cars of the MGTD myself. As a kid I always wanted one. Still probably.

Generator is missing, hopefully in the parts pile. Basically a parts car, agree with bobhess.

These always get updated to 12 vdc alternators and modern lights lights etc. It’s no biggie if obsolete stuff isn’t there, but it’s nice to see what the system being replaced was to do the best conversion. It’s $4k as I see it. Or more to the MGTD cultists.
