Classifieds Find: 1973 Chrysler Newport Survivor

We’ve had some interesting finds showing up in the BF Classifieds lately, like this 1973 Chrysler Newport Survivor. Something like this wouldn’t normally jump out at me, but when was the last time you found a low mileage survivor for this cheap? For just $4,500 you could haul the whole family in classic luxury! It even has AC, although it’s an aftermarket system. It’s still owned by the original owner’s family, but it’s time to part ways. This 37k mile Newport is currently located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, so you will want to add in transportation/import costs.

It takes a lot of engine and torque to move a boat of this size down the interstate, which is why Chrysler installed big blocks into these. This one is powered by the 400 cui V8, which produced a little over 200 horsepower and well over 300 foot-pounds of torque. There’s no word on whether this one has the two barrel or 4 barrel carburetor, but we do know that it has a brand new dual exhaust system! This beast should be able to cruise comfortably at modern interstate speeds, just as long as you can keep fuel in the tank.

Speaking of comfort, you really can’t beat the couch like ride of the bench seats in this Newport. We don’t get a full view of the front seats, but the back seats look perfect. It’s amazing that they held up to family vacations so well, I’m not sure if that’s a testament to Chrysler or the family that owned it!

If this Mopar were closer, I’d be tempted to buy it to just cruise around town in. The only problem I see with it is not having a garage big enough to park it in! That issue aside, this looks like it could be a great classic. You don’t see these anymore, so it would stand out and car events, plus you could easily load up the whole family. Heck, make sure the AC blows cold and that the radio works and your family will probably be excited to go on trips in it with you! This beautiful survivor can be found here on Kijiji.

I loved cruising around in my aunt’s dark green one back in the day. That vanilla/butterscotch look does nothing for me though. That license plate is from around 1987 and supports long term ownership claim. Glad I don’t have a tandem garage to fit this yacht, or I’d be looking at it since I’m already in Ontario. Excellent value!

I had a 73 like this but in the two door version. Was a great car tempting but too many toys now.

Josh, why do you say it is an aftermarket A/C system. That is a factory A/C compressor.

It was Chrysler’s AirTemp division a/c system. Bullet proof.

This car was featured a couple pages back as a reader ad. Nice cars, thirsty, but great road cars. This, in ’73, was how the family got to grandma’s in Indiana( or wherever) No reason why it couldn’t do the same today,,,,with a lot of gas, and I’m saying that, because I recently bought that ’77 GMC, and it’s a hog, kinda bums me out actually, watching the gauge drop while driving. We’re so accustomed to fuel efficient vehicles today, where we check the gas gauge every other day, ,,,it just takes some getting used to.

There were TONS of these barges on the road when I growing up. This was a popular color combination as well.

My college cruiser was my dad’s 73 Newport. It was much the same but had the 440 under the hood.
Like most college boys my friends and I beat on that car with no mercy.
When it was driven to the wreckers it was still running ok but was using more oil than gas and with the atrocious gas mileage it got that was saying something!!

Love to see these BIG, early ’70’s Chrysler products when they come around. They dodged both time and The Oil Embargo.

Add a 440 and that New Yorker is exactly the same as a friend of mine bought new in ’73 (instead of the Imperial he originally planned to buy), right down to the colour combo.

It was a pig to park (one needed to call the harbour master to get it out of my buddy’s apartment parking lot), drank fuel like it was going out of style, but what a great car to cruise around Hollyweird in, back then.

Had a ’71 300 Coupe in Avacado metallic. No vinyl top. No tacked on trim. Special ordered by the owner of Richmond Chrysler-Plymouth in British Columbia. The car’s powertrain was then built in-house. Had a 6-Pack on it. The car was sold to Jim Harris in Seattle and I got it from him (he took the 6-BBL off). I put an M1 intake and a 750 CFM Edelbrock on it. Had tons of fun with it, to the point I sold it to a friend’s older brother- have some great stories with that car, but lets just say at 90 MPH the tone of the engine would change and the speedo needle would disappear in a hurry.
Tim drove the car awhile and then sold it to some “Dude” in the Portland area. That guy pulled the powertrain and…put it in his Dart. “I wanna go fast.” Stupid. Pull a “1-of-1” Chrysler of Canada 300 apart to put in a Dart.
Only know this because about 3 years later some other dude (in Kansas or Missouri) called Tim to see if he had the title…PT Barnum said it best.
Too bad, it actually was a historically significant car

Perfect definition of “land yacht.” This looks like a nice car. Don’t mind if I do.
