Clean Driver: 1964 Ford Thunderbird

t1

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Charles H. for this cool find! The seller of this 1964 Ford Thunderbird has owned it for the last 28 years, and apparently has taken pretty good care of it, keeping it garaged when it wasn’t on the road. Although it’s not a heavily optioned car, these 1964-66 T-Birds have quite a following and are great cars for long drives. My uncle owned a series of these growing up and took me for many rides that I still vividly remember for the smoothness and power. This one is located in Midlothian, Virginia and is listed for sale here on eBay, where the buy-it-now is set at $6,000 but the seller is considering lower offers.

Although the 1964 doesn’t have the cool sequential turn signals of the ’65 and ’66 cars, I still love the clean lines of this generation Thunderbird’s rear end. And if you really like those turn signals (I do) you can add them here. The chrome on this car looks pretty good in the pictures, although there are no closeups, and it seems to be straight as well. I doubt that the paint is original, and based on the reflection in this picture it’s either needing some polish or it’s a driver quality job–not that there’s anything wrong with that!

The seller picked some unusual pictures to show, but this one highlights the “space age” look of the dash, and also (I believe) shows the panel right of the steering wheel that allows the wheel to slide to the right for easier entry. The seller says the car has less than 53,000 original miles, but doesn’t tell us much else apart from saying there are minor scratches on the driver’s side quarter panel. It would be nice if there were a closeup of those, or of the front seat upholstery (there’s a great shot of the back seat that looks really nice).

I had forgotten about the great crank-out quarter windows on my uncle’s 1964 until I saw this picture. It looks as though part of the door panel has been recovered in close but not quite matching vinyl. I’m fine with that for a driven classic; I don’t think the seller or buyer of this car would be looking to win any shows, and it looks like the repairs were done with care. I could live with the ripples in the lower door–I’m not going to see those driving down the road!

I believe this is the original 390 V-8, and if it isn’t, it certainly looks the part. The 390 provides plenty of smooth power, even for a car of this size and weight. Looking closely at this picture, I remember asking my uncle why he had a coffee can attached to the firewall (it’s actually a vacuum canister) and him laughing good-naturedly at my naive question. His favorite car of all time was his ’66 Town Landau, but the one I remember is his white ’64 that was plain and honest like this one, and the way he’d drive us somewhere in it every chance he had. I hope this one goes to a home that appreciates the big Birds like he did! Would that home be yours?
