While Porsche’s 924 is a car that can easily be overlooked by enthusiasts due to sitting at the low end of the totem pole, there were a few special editions that made it stand out a bit more – at least cosmetically. The Martini and Sebring cars were graphics packages with fancy interiors at best, but the little know and generically-named “Special Edition” like this example seen here on craigslist could actually be considered a proper homage to the 911 Club Sports that are worth oodles of money today.
These limited-production models were stripped down by the factory, fitted with manual crank windows, a passenger-side mirror delete, light-weight maroon-striped cloth sport seats, staggered wheel setup and most importantly, a custom Koni adjustable suspension. That’s some serious hardware thrown at the plebeian 924, and light-weight versions of any performance car always tend to command a following and higher price tag.
The seller is correct that just 500 were made in 1988, and this one has sat in storage for many years due to a bad fuel pump. Mileage is well under 100,000 and the seller notes the clutch is also stuck from sitting. The M44/09 motor still turns freely but its condition can best be described as unknown. The interior looks good, and the body doesn’t appear too rough either, but pictures aren’t the greatest. The seller has no price listed but chooses instead to opine that he has it insured for $7K.
The engine bay doesn’t show too many signs of wanton neglect, although who knows if rodents made their home here. The coolant tank doesn’t appear weathered and the cap is still shiny; perhaps this is an indication the mileage is indeed fairly low for the year and it wasn’t unloved before it was parked. Hard to tell if some of that wiring is extraneous, but if the original suspension and wheels are still in place, the good stuff is indeed still attached. A rare car that doesn’t come up often – worth a look. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Greg Calahan for the find.
Timing belt replacement before you even turn it over, then go from there. Hood supports, too.
Send the motor off to Paeco for a stage 2 or 3 and you would have a fun ride. Good project.
Note this is no mere 924; it’s a 924S — the crucial “S” indicating the model’s late-era revival with a proper Porsche powertrain (among other running production improvements) taken from the 944. Really, think of it more as a 944 wearing the 924’s slimmer body and earlier-style dashboard, which also makes it marginally faster due to lower weight and drag, though it does give up a bit of lateral grip to the narrower tires that fit in those unflared wheelarches.
These are good fun cars.
Rear seat dirty?
Never buy a collectable car from a flipper, I’ll bet this car it’s full of surprises bad surprises, engine, transmission, suspension, body, interior, you name it even price LOL
Mine coming up for sale soon. I’m the 3rd owner 145k miles and no sunroof makes it even more rare as most added the sunroof as an option which made it less of a true Club sport. Dash is original and in 99% like new condition. Very, very well maintained with many new parts with receipts from very reputable shops. Maintenance is up to date with zero leaks and so clean you can eat off the engine.
I’ll be interested if the asking price is realistic, post your car here in Barn Finds for sale.
