Cool Crew Cab: 1979 Dodge D-200 Adventurer

This is a big truck for a big crew in Big Sky Country – Montana. Four-door trucks are as thick as generic, silver commuter cars in almost every city in the country and they rarely have anyone in the back seat but I bet this one did back in the day. The seller has it listed here on Hemmings, it’s located in Eureka, Montana, and they’re asking $11,900 or best offer.

What a unique graphics package, have any of you see this one before? I can’t seem to be able to dig up anything about it on the ol’ interstream. Clearly, I’m not looking in the right spot but the seller refers to it as the “HC3” stripe package. Dodge had the “sundown” type of graphics in this era as did I’m sure other manufacturers. This one is not the same but it’s at least somewhat similar to my 1980 Dodge D-50 Sport pickup with the multi-colored tape stripes.

This truck has led a full life it looks like and that’s not to say that it’s past its prime and ready to be put out to pasture. It just needs a little help to bring it back to being a reliable truck again. This is not a short truck and owning a crew cab pickup from this era will automatically get you more looks than a lot of other trucks would get. The bed has surface rust in it but the seller says that it’s rust-free which I interpret as being anything other than surface rust. The paint has a certain look to it, who can name the term that I’m thinking of? (crickets)…

The interior needs a bit of help as you can see. I’d want to strip everything out of it, or at least the seats and door panels, and treat that rust before doing anything cosmetic. But, I don’t see any huge issues inside other than it needing new carpet and seat covers. They do mention that the radio doesn’t work and they aren’t sure if either the fuel gauge or speedometer works. The rear passenger compartment looks clean and I don’t know what the story on this truck is. It’s too fancy to be a work truck but maybe being in Montana, it was used on a ranch?

The engine is Dodge’s 360 cubic-inch V8 with a four-barrel carburetor which would have had 180 horsepower. The seller says that it needs a little carb work and the truck needs shocks and probably brakes and I’d just plan on changing every wear part on this one. Hagerty is at $8,800 for a #4 fair condition truck as a general reference. Have any of you owned an older crew cab pickup? What’s this Dodge worth in its present condition?

If you look closely at the end of the stripe on the front fenders there appears to be a bear. Sort of remember a “big Bear” edition of some Dodge trucks and maybe vans sold out west in the late 1970s. The factories would come up with special editions for different geographical areas and market them as limited edition vehicles. Usually the difference from a typical truck was the fancy stripe kit.
Bet this one was used on a ranch or farm out west.

It appears to be a Ram’s head but I agree it could be a regional graphics package

Looks to me like a Cougar or a Mountain lion on there…

If it’s from Montana it’s very strange it’s not a 4×4 that was usually assumed in that state?

Yeah… the problem here is… even though WE al know it is worth $5-6K… there is always some dummy with more money than common sense to pay way more than an old truck is worth and therefore drive the apparent values way up!

I currently own this truck and love it. It made its way all the way to Indiana. I have a few plans for it. But for now, I drive it daily.
