Cool Custom: 1950 Chevrolet 3100 4X4

Up for grabs here is sort of an unusual pairing, but it’s a pretty cool offering and overall the builder seems to have hit the mark.  This is what happens when you combine the chassis from a Chevrolet K15 truck with the body of a 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup, and I’m guessing it’s quite an attention-getter at local car gatherings, so if you’ve always wanted a custom but didn’t want to make it yourself it’s probably worth checking out.  This one’s in Galena, Ohio, a short drive north of Columbus, and can be spotted here on eBay, where bidding is up to $8,800 so far, not enough yet for it to exchange hands as the reserve has not been met.

Beginning with the rolling part, the K15 had a reputation for ruggedness and durability, plus this one is a four-wheel-drive so that’s good news.  No mention as to the year of the chassis, and although we don’t get to see it from down below the frame is said to have no rust and is free of any issues.  I’m a fan of how the body looks with all the different colors, and both of those doors are OEM components, but the original doors are also included in the sale.  Not a huge deal and I’m sure it’s just the way things lined up when the trucks were combined, but the wheels are a bit more forward than the body, especially in the back.  It is what it is, just be sure you can live with that before making the purchase.

Things are equally interesting inside, with the dashboard in fine shape and new OEM gauges.  There’s also a modern Bluetooth radio and an aftermarket steering wheel, but I’m not exactly sure what kind of material is on the floor, though it seems to fit right in with the rest of the vibe.  The tinted glass is new all the way around, and a roll bar has been added to the bed.  According to the seller, the truck is ready to be enjoyed as-is, or he also throws out the idea that the next owner may want to restore the body to make it look like new.

There’s a 350 V8 under the hood, which we get no details about other than it’s said to run great, with a Turbo 350 automatic transmission that’s had a recent rebuild.  The engine compartment seems to be in good order, with some dress-up gadgets in place to enhance the appearance.  A new gas tank and sending unit have been added, along with new shocks and a set of tires stated to be in great condition.  This one’s kind of growing on me, and my initial thought is I’d probably drive the truck the way it is, at least for a while. How about you?

Great looking truck, as long as that sounds deadening on the floor isn’t hiding some uglies. Take it a little further and enjoy the truck.

I feel the same about flex hoses as Scotty does about red heater hoses.

Very nice, and this is what should be done to all these crusty, forlorn stock ADs.( or GMC NDs) Since spray guns must be outlawed for some reason, and you have to present your life documents to buy a spray can at Wallyworld,( who would ever want to huff paint,,,stupid kids, yet, here we are) no wonder they aren’t painted. Seriously, this is the best thing that could happen to these, I say good show, ol’ chap. Looks like crap now, painted, I bet would double the money. Heck, I think Earl Scheib is still around, just not $19.95 anymore.

Correction, you know how when you look something up on the computer, then you get all the info on that,,,somehow? I read, Earl Scheib filed for bankruptcy in 2010, ad the shops are now independently owned. Still, how hard is it to operate a Binks #7( or equivalent), heck, I used an electric sprayer once with results better than this. I just don’t get it.

Neat truck.Like to take it for ride to see how it handles.I’d paint this one imo. I’d go with plum crazy or The 60’s chevy gm color artesian turquoise. I’m gonna say the reserve is 15-20 k.

The first thing I would do?…. Ditch that roll bar! Then paint the wheels red. Then, when I win the lotto…. Have it painted an nice deep (beyond navy) blue.
