Even though there are very few pictures offered in the ad for this 1951 Chevy for sale here on craigslist in dry Palm Desert, California, its character still shines through. This looks like a really solid, driveable car with a barn find background. I happened to be driving through Palm Desert yesterday and was hoping to see this car on the road. According to the seller, it was in a barn for 30 years and then brought back to life as a daily driver. The description is reasonably detailed and complete, which helps make up for the lack of photos.
This Chevy has the reliable six cylinder engine and three speed column shifter it came with in 1951; the car has an original interior, including the headliner, though the front seat is blanket covered. All the lights work, it’s got a new battery, and the original 6 volt generator was rebuilt – but all the wiring is original to the car. It does feature a new gas tank. It is stated to have just over 42,000 original miles, still turning, as the car is driven regularly.
The seller mentions that it has no spiders, which must be a desert thing. But apparently this car did spend some time in a colder climate, as it does have some rust in the rockers.
As you can see even in the photos, it’s a used 65 year old car, and will require some work. It will need tires, the horn is not working, the passenger window is cracked, and has a few dents and dimples. Personally, I’d leave the interior and body alone, update anything that does not work or looks dicey, and keep it on the road, just as the current owner has done. This car would be fun to own and drive. On the other hand, I am not so thrilled with the asking price of $8,000, even though I can sympathize with the seller wanting top dollar. What do you think this beautiful old survivor is worth?
I’m a Ford guy, but this old Cebby looks great. It’s priced a little high, but if it were mine I’d try to get top dollar too.
It’s the best BF we’ve seen in a while.
With most all mechanicals sorted out and the body being solid. I don’t think the price is too far off. It’s at least worth 6k I think.
Love it!
Ad is down. Gone?
I thought $5000 was about it…neat old ride though….would have a hard time NOT painting it…
Another nice find. Sounds like the seller has enjoyed it
The guy is way off. 4K TOPS if that….
Where are the Skirts?
If it sold he obviously wasn’t way off.
love it. my birth year.
And one of the most attractive GM bodies of the early 50’s.
