Disassembled For Many Years: 1951 Jowett Jupiter

j1

This unusual and quirky Jowett Jupiter has been disassembled for many years after being partially restored. It is currently in Brunswick, Maine and is being offered for sale here on eBay, with bidding very low at the moment but the reserve has not yet been met. Thanks to reader Peter R. for this great find!

When the words “mostly disassembled” and “mostly complete” are both in a car advertisement, I’m generally concerned. On the other hand, sometimes it can bring the price of a exotic or unusual car down to a level mere mortals can afford. With only 731 Mk. I Jupiters manufactured and not many left, this is certainly unusual. In this picture, the right rear fender is inside the car, and it looks like there are pieces of wire holding the other panels in place.

The seller describes a car that has been stripped with components missing such as the grille, steering wheel and headlight assemblies. I suspect those will be hard to find. However, the body does look solid and I’m hoping the zinc chromate primer has protected it. The seller does note that there is work that needs to be done on the quarter panels behind both doors.

I’m guessing that the upholstery was re-done at the time the car was stripped; it’s certainly in too nice shape to be original. However, I’m not sure what it would look like if it were cleaned up–I suppose it depends on both budget and the level to which you were refurbishing the car.

The engine is a flat-four, and it may well be missing some parts as it, along with the transmission, is disassembled. If you are interested in this car, the first thing I would suggest is contacting the North American Jowett Register and inquiring about parts availability. They may even know more about this particular car. I know it would be quite a challenge to take this one on, but when will you ever get a chance at this price; or at least what this car should sell for?

I want one of these more than even a Shelby Mustang but…I guess I’d hold out for a more complete one, please! ^_^

I remember seeing an episode of Jay Lenos garage where he talked about having to have a grille hand made for a car he was restoring. He ended up paying large coin for it, if memory serves me right something like $17K for the grille. My point is that when your restoring something that is this rare and unusual and your seller says mostly complete than you better hope your wallet has a lot of big number bills in it. This is out of my league so I won’t be conserved.
