Documented Tri-Power: 1965 Pontiac GTO

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

I was born in 1965 and so was this Pontiac GTO. I think it has fared better than me over the past 57 years! The car is listed here on eBay and is currently bid to $47,900. There are less than 2 days remaining in the auction and the GTO is located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The seller states that the car is original but there has been a lot of work done on the engine and the replacement of numerous parts. Regardless it is an exquisitely nice car and a great example of mid 60’s muscle.

The odometer is said to read 87,850 miles and the GTO hails from North Carolina originally. The black interior looks great against the white exterior paint. The factory color should be Code C Cameo Ivory. This car looks more like a 1970 Polar White. The car has the correct wood steering wheel. The seller states that the car has new brakes and new shocks. You can barely see the push button radio in the dash. The car’s chrome and glass appear to be in excellent condition.

The Pontiac YS code 389 cubic inch V8 engine is said to be numbers matching and has been modified to WS specs which means it has the Tri-Power carburetor set up. The three two barrels feed a very clean motor and the exhaust exits via dual exhausts. The car has power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning. On today’s cars, those are standard features but back in 1965 that was a loaded or heavily optioned car. The GTO sends power to the rear end via an automatic transmission that is controlled by a floor shifter.

I normally don’t like pinstripes but the simple red pinstripe really pops and shows the great lines of this GTO. Maybe the pinstripe pops because the car is riding on red line tires. This GTO appears to be highly detailed and claims to be a winner in the last three car shows that it has entered. It is certainly a stunning and very clean car.

A single pinstripe was factory applied on each side of all ’65 and ’66 GTOs unless you ordered one with Option 491, “Delete Stripes”.

My first car was a ’65 GTO. It only had a few options: Console, AM Radio, 4-speed, Safety-T-Track, Custom Wheel Discs, Tinted Glass, and a Vinyl Top. It was a bear to park without power steering.

Jerry, thanks for sharing. Nothing like first hand knowledge. Did many 65 GTO’s come with vinyl tops?

Factory vinyl tops were very popular on all musclecars in the mid-sixties. We didn’t know then that they would lead to a very quick rust-out of the rear window lower channel. This caused my GTO to leak rainwater into the trunk by 1968. Yikes!

So , as a young car crazy boy born in 62, 5 houses away from me , was a wine red , tripower convertible 65
It was a beauty and well cared for and not winter used
I must admit that it was and still is , a great looking vehicle
But i always found the rear too long , that trunk space is like a pick up truck box …

It’s a nice looking car. I wish the seller had included an image of the trim tag. PHS documentation should be a selling point but it’s only mentioned and not shown. It’s doubtful this car has spent its life in the southeast given it was assembled in Pontiac MI and not in Doraville GA.

For 1965, Pontiac A-body vehicles were assembled in the following four (4) GM plants; Baltimore, Pontiac, Kansas City and Fremont. And, just because it was assembled at a particular location doesn’t necessarily mean that it was kept in that region of the US, especially over the course of 57 years.

I loved my 65 GOAT. Got Drunk and POed one night. I still have the left rear tail light. The only part that was left that didn’t get AFUed. Changed my life that night.

I was 19 and ordered a new 1965 GTO convertible but since I was paying for it myself it only had a 4 speed, PS, PB, and the base 389/325 HP engine for $2,950.

Loved the car but bought a new1967 GTO convertible which I liked even more.
