Doors For All: 1961 Pontiac Catalina Limo

catalinawagon

So not only does this Pontiac Catalina Airporter Limousine have room for about 12 people, it’s got a separate set of boxes on the roof for all their luggage. Currently the Pontiac is located in Brentwood, California and for sale here on craigslist for $6,250. Thanks to prolific finder Robert R for this great find! This rare example of how folks got back and forth between hotels and airports before shuttle vans would make a really cool vintage race hauler, as long as your racing car isn’t too heavy. I can see taking my entire racing team along with spares, fuel, and the other team accouterments–yes, I might have to massage or replace the existing V8. Of course, that would be a shame, as the original engine runs and the car drives, although it doesn’t stop!

How can you beat 8 doors! The only really bad spot appears to be the bodywork on the passenger side rear quarter panel, and hopefully there’s some solid metal underneath. What would you do with this huge Pontiac?

    buy it..

..have your wife sit next to you in the front,
….your dog in the second seat…
…. and then put the mother in law in the very rear…

    …Parents had a 64 Belair Wagon when I was a kid…with 7 kids in tow…
Dad never would have been able to reach me with that long right arm of his when I was being a nuisance if we had been riding around in this colossus….
Then again, he probably would have made me ride in the luggage garage on the roof as soon as I showed the first signs of my blood sugar dropping during one of his marathon car trips. He would have been more than happy to put me in the “time out” box….but only after my mother washed my face with the communal facecloth… already used on my six siblings, (and as a rag to check the oil)…

is that a transmission cooler on the left interfender? i wonder what it has for brakes as it would need much more then the stock SW units. the master cylinder does not look like a dual. going to cost some money to make this safe. it has been up on CL for 2 months so maybe time for seller to take a offer. great find.

Safe – Schmafe…..seat belts were an option….brakes were under powered…..horses were over powered….you had to hit something doing AT LEAST 30 mph just to know you actually hit something. I guess the better braking would be good to consider for everyone else on the road with this awesome ride coming up behind you….., especially the guy in the smart car or the Chevy Spark!

How’d you like to re-do the interior of that beast?

I see six doors, not eight. More than enough either way!

Rich, you’re right! I hadn’t noticed that! I guess you were supposed to get in at the curb and slide over!

Too bad I did not see this when it ran as I would have said:

Diagonal Park it in front of the police station!

Rich, you forgot to count the driver’s door (which of course would be the driver’s passenger door if viewing the longester from its right-hand side.
