Drive or Restore? 1928 Buick Standard Six Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller of this Buick Standard Six Coupe says that the car runs and drives well and that it will require a repaint to bring it back to life. You will find it listed for sale here on Craigslist. Located in Newbury, Vermont, it is being offered for sale with a clean title. The owner has set a price of $12,500 for this Buick.

The Buick looks nice and solid. This appears to be the Sport Coupe, which means that it should have a rumble seat out the back. The body looks really straight and solid, and while the paint may be a bit faded in spots, I don’t see any obvious reason why it couldn’t be used as it is. The wooden spoke wheels are said to be in good condition, and they certainly look solid.

The interior is also neat from what we can see. There’s a little bit of detail work to be undertaken with the dash and door trims, but like the exterior, it could definitely be used as it is.

The engine is a straight-six, which I believe to be the 191ci engine, backed by a 3-speed manual transmission. The seller states that the car runs and drives well. Once again, it looks fairly clean and dry under the hood, with no obvious signs of oil or coolant leaks. The new owner may choose to give the engine a cosmetic restoration at some stage, but the engine appears to be serviceable at this stage.

This Buick could be the source of a full restoration project, or it could be used and enjoyed as it currently stands. What may sway your decision could be market values. As the vehicle stands now, the price is about right. A nicely restored example will sell for prices in excess of $35,000. Which way would you go?

I’m always amazed at how many cars of this era were painted that shade of green. The 28 Chevrolet I inherited from my dad is that color.

The story on all Model T’s being black was in part because the first fast drying paint developed was black. Makes me wonder if there was some “paint tech” reason green was so popular.

For the record T’s were all black for about the middle 10 years or so of their production run. Colors were offered for the last two years, 26 and 27, though I can’t remember exactly which year colors other than black were eliminated. Black wasn’t even available for the first 4 or 5 years of production.

As for this Buick, I would just use it as is. Very nice.
