One of the most iconic muscle cars of the 1960s forward was the Chevy Chevelle SS 396. But after 1968, the Super Sport was an option rather than a distinctive series. That means without specific documentation it’s hard to identify a 1969 and later SS 396 as being the real deal or a clone. The seller offers a driver-quality Malibu that you would assume is authentic, but with natural use and age it’s priced more like a tribute. Located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, this black-on-black Chevy is available here on craiglist for $29,000 OBO. Another Bow-tie tip from Barn Finder Pat L.!
Besides needing documentation to prove a 1970 SS 396, the engine no longer displaced 396 cubic inches. Chevy had increased the cubes to 402 perhaps to sidetrack the insurance people. But they still marketed the machine as a 396 unless you opted for the new 454. Though at option status now, more than 53,000 SS 396s left the factory that year, still a sizeable part of Chevelle and Malibu production.
According to the seller, this Chevelle has more than 87,000 miles with no indication of any serious mechanical work having been done. Or whether the engine and 4-speed manual transmission are numbers-matching. But the odometer is broken, so perhaps the car has already seen the 100k mark. The photos provided show a black car in low lighting, so that doesn’t help determine the quality of the body and paint. The seller describes the interior as “fair,” but it looks okay from what we can tell.
If this is a real SS 396, the seller has priced it to move. If not, it’s still a nice Chevy that’s going to turn some heads wherever you take it. Especially if you light up the rear tires at the nearest intersection. The seller is willing to provide delivery, but we assume some distance factors apply and perhaps some coin.
Poof, ads gone! More questions than answers. 30k for a driver quality 1970 chevelle of any motor/trans would grab my attention, a big block and 4 speed!! Too good to be true.
The police probably got too close to him.
I just looked at the ad. It’s still up there. Pretty good deal in this day and age.
My phone must have acted up or something. Correct and now I can take a closer look! Thanks
Add is still up 3:51 PM 5/10/23
Great ride !
I agree! Now I see I was mistaken. It said “deleted by author” when I clicked, could have been a fluke. Now that I see the ad, What in the world is this guy practically giving this car away?
Wooderson says “All Right, All Right, All Right – needs a 454”.
Price is too low. Hopefully this “seller” doesn’t have a graveyard of bargain hunters on his property!
