Endless Options: 1964 Corvette

1964 Corvette Convertible

This Corvette likely has an interesting past, as it is believed to have been used as a race car. No word on what kind of racing it participated in, but if I had to guess I would go with drag racing. It clearly had a roll cage installed at some point in its life, but as far as I can tell that’s really the only proof of a racing background. Of course, like most retired race cars, it lacks its racing parts and it’s engine. That isn’t uncommon, as those parts are usually expensive and subsequently get reused on other cars. If you’ve been looking for a Corvette project to modify, this one looks like the perfect candidate for a modern engine and any other custom bits you’d like to add. Find it here on eBay in Portland, Oregon! So what engine would you put in this Corvette?

    Josh,
With the 3″ wheel studs in the front, I’d say it most likely was used for SCCA road racing or something similar.

The NHRA brought out a rule regarding wheel stud length back in the 1970s. As wheel centers became thicker, the short studs didn’t have much thread engagement with the nuts, and cars began losing wheels. The new rule stated that the studs had to exit the wheel hub by at least the diameter. In other words, 7/16ths inch diameter studs had to protrude the wheels by 7/16ths of an inch.

Did you notice the rear wheels don’t have long studs? I would think it more important to have long studs on the rear, for drag racing. Road racing requires on all 4 wheels. Maybe the rear hubs were replaced.
It was just something I noticed. No big deal.

It also already has an updated dual master cylinder, usually required for road racing.

Considering this was supposed to be a race car… the dashboard, gauges and body panels are surprisingly intact and appear to be in good shape. Interesting project with lots of possibilities.

This car is already over $15000, way to much for a project car.

We do lots of guessing about some cars. A roll cage and long studs?
Racing means heavy abuse, only offset by a history worth repeating.
If your friend borrowed your car, spent 3 hours hitting curbs and over revving your engine every weekend for a year, you wouldn’t be bragging to the guy responding to your Craigslist add.
“For sale BMW M3, only had the engine blown twice, the suspension bent three times, and the side destroyed four times. Looks and runs slightly better than a 325i. Make offer.”

There were several corvettes built specifically for road racing and were born with 36 gallon fuel tanks. Known as “tankers”, and worth quite a bit more for their rarity. It would be prudent to ask the seller if it has an oversized tank in it
