1966 Mustang Drag Racer

This 1966 Mustang will take you back to the days when anyone with a local sponsorship and a willingness to wrench a car could have fun at the local drag strip. The seller claims that early in its life this coupe was given a Hi-Po 289 from a wrecked Shelby GT350 plus a roll cage and other drag racing equipment, before being sent racing at the Fremont, CA strip. It’s hard to confirm its authenticity without racing paperwork or period photos / magazine writeups, but this car has the equipment that a racer from the late ’60s would have: Edelbrock StreetMaster intake, Mickey Thompson cheater slicks on steel wheels, bolted-in roll cage, tow bars, auxiliary Sun gauges, vintage bucket racing seats with diamond-pleat vinyl covering, B&M shifter, and so on. There are some racing stickers and decals on the windows that are consistent with the car’s claimed history too.

The body and interior are in near-perfect shape, as you would expect for a car that was converted to a race car about a year into its life and then raced only occasionally. The seller claims that it is rust free, and many photos of the undercarriage support that. The presence of lots of clean white paint overspray underneath might take some explaining, and the seller is trying to contact the driver’s family for history and photos, which should fill in the car’s history if he is successful. We do know from the VIN that this pony started life with Ford’s straight-six engine, which would have provided a cheap base for building an occasional racer with limited financial resources.

The engine bay is all business, with an open Holly carb mounted on the Edelbrock manifold, an Accel distributor, and Shelby Tri-Y headers. Underneath there’s a C4 auto transmission with high stall-speed torque converter, a safety loop around the drive shaft, and a locked 9 inch rear end with 4.11 gears and old-school traction bars. You can’t expect to drive this Mustang on the street much, but for the few occasions when vintage drag racing is in the air, this car will be the center of attention.

    I’ve never been much in to drag racing, but I love old drag race cars. So many of them have very straight and clean bodies like this…..I guess at 1/4 mile runs, they are low mileage bodies…..

    When I was in HS I had a 70′ Torino 429 Cobra jet yellow with black matte hood and shaker air scoop which I took off and put a velocity stack on it when I cruised, had a set of traction bars and the old “N50” series tires on back she rubbed on the wheel wells so I put a set of air shocks on her but still nobody could ride in the back seat haha those were the days.

    This is a really neat old car, actually built with similar/same pieces as mine was in 1985.. Even the Streetmaster Intake and Wimbeldon White paint.. But the seller needs to tell the truth to the fact that the car WAS raced at LEAST till 1987/88, because The Firestone/Centerline ET Bracket Series stickers are from one of those two years, as are the Mickey Thompson rear tires..not disrespecting it, because honestly I should have left mine built like that….

    Just a six to v8 conversion without the provenance. That dagenham 4 speed that came with the six wouldn’t have lasted a 100 feet drag racing. Just another T code v8 worth the sum of the parts. in my humble opinion.
