Exclusive: 1966 Dodge Town Wagon

If this Dodge Town Wagon isn’t cool enough as is, the seller Frances G has a 426 Hemi for it that is ready to be installed! Purists, don’t fret, the original inline 6 is still in this truck. It has been parked since 2014 but should run with a fresh battery and a tune-up. If you could swap the Hemi in without damaging the originality, this would be one heck of a rig! Please use the form below to message him if you have any questions or would like to buy it.

What Makes It Special? This vehicle has been garaged for all its life (52 years) matching numbers, 6 cylinders with 3 on the tree. ALL paperwork since purchase date (1/15/65) original owners manual. If the 6 is too slow for you we also have a 1966 Hemi 426. Block is back from engine shop, all new in the boxes; pistons, rods, crank, cam, etc, etc. Just waiting to be assembled and installed, engine sold separately. Owner searched out this great barn find, bought the 426 Hemi for the ultimate street “sleeper”, but died before finishing project.

Body Condition: Perfect body, straight, clean, NO RUST, NO DENTS. Original paint, wash off the dust, wax, and it will look like new! Cracked windshield. All doors and locks work well. A couple of splits in upholstery. Gauges all work. Bumpers chromed (only change from original) This 2 door Town Wagon is in wonderful condition, truly a sweet project car.

Mechanical Condition: Running in 2014, 6-cylinder with 3 on the tree. Needs battery and brakes to be a runner. All original equipment

Our thanks to Frances for listing this sweet Dodge as an Exclusive! There’s no word on how much he’d like for the Hemi, but it might be worth contacting him to buy the Hemi separately if you have a Mopar project that needs a 426. If you have a survivor that needs a new home, please consider listing it here on Barn Finds!

Okay, I see stereo speakers so where’s
the radio? Really like this truck! Could use it for almost anything and the slanty
would be just fine. Of course I’d buy the
Hemi, find one of these that’s a basket
case, and start building from there. As
for this truck, it’s far too nice to be hacked up. Hope it finds a good home
though. If I didn’t have chronic emptywalletosis, it would be right at home at my house.

I will take everything including the 426 and you can set the price on the Hemi. Now, you will take a personal check for the whole lot. Right?

Not trying to be pedantic, but “Frances” is a woman’s name and “Francis” is a man’s name. Either he is a she or his name is misspelled.

Slant six sometimes called inline or even V6. Not matter what you call it its good for a million miles before tune up!

I’ve always referred to the slant six as a “Hillside Hemi”.

A hemi? Oh, for crying out loud. If you think a hemi is going to make this a better truck, please, think again. Save the hemi for that Dart project, you have no business dropping a hemi in this. It’s just not that kind of vehicle. This was the only vehicle to give the Suburban any competition, and it didn’t do well for some reason ( and don’t say it should have had a hemi, 6 cylinder Suburbans were the norm). These were designed to haul your ( big) family pulling a camper or boat at 55 mph, not 13 second 1/4’s. I think some of you that think hemi or Cummins is the automatic logical update, but for what this is, the slant 6 or 318 did just fine. It’s extremely rare as is, the last year for the Town Wagon, and should be left this way.

I don’t think I’d change a thing; clean up, tune up and drive. The hemi would make a good conversation piece for my shop. I could see someone pulling the six and dropping in a Poly 318, which would get you from gas station to gas station quicker, but I couldn’t be bothered. I’d be out enjoying it instead…

I’ve always loved these, although still packing a 1958 body style, they were extremely dated by 1966. I’d leave it as is, except for maybe slipping in a nice 318.

As far as “bolt in”, the hemi won’t fit without all custom work. Might as well put a chev small block if it has to be modified, but the slant six should work just fine.

I too sent an email, with STRONG interest. I used to ride around the local cruise night in a 66 Power Wagon with a blown 392 Hemi. Back then, no hood as it wouldn’t fit the motor was removed in favor of tame ol’ 360. I would enjoy this vehicle as is for a year or so and then embark on replicating the dream of my youth!
