There’s been a lot of talk lately about the little Porsche 914 and it’s six-cylinder sibling, the 914-6. There seems to be quite a bit of confusion about the 914-6 and what makes it so special. While based on the same car as the 914, the 6 was faster and a whole lot rarer. A total of 3,500 914-6s were built and Reader Frank Z just happens to own one! His is a project and hasn’t been run in 11 years, but he claims it’s solid and still has the correct flat 6 engine. It’s located in Livermore, California and he is asking $30,000.
Asking Price: $30,000
Location: Livermore, California
Mileage: 61,249
Title Status: Clean
VIN: 9140432602
Seller’s Description: This is a 914-6, one of only 3500 cars made.
Body Condition: The body is clean, no rust.
Mechanical Condition: The car has sat for 11 years. It was a running driving car 11 years ago. Everything is there just has not been started in 11 years. Motor # does not match but is the correct motor for the car.
Now before anyone freaks out that these cars aren’t worth this kind of money, real 914-6s have been fetching big money. As a matter of fact, top condition cars are hitting the six-figure range now. Getting this one to that point will definitely be expensive, but not as expensive as you might think. The pricey part here is the engine and while it might not be numbers matching, its at least all here. Hopefully, this Porsche goes to a good home where it can be restored and enjoyed!

I haven’t seen Supertrapps on a car in decades. In the late-80’s a friend had them in his 1964 Nova with a very mild small block V8, it sounded great. I don’t think they ever made much headway beyond the motorcycle market.
It seems like people are asking 6 figures for nicely restored 914-6’s, I have no idea if they are changing hands at that price level, but I was surprised.

In ’82 while I was attending Naval Intelligence Processing Systems Class “C” school at Naval Air Station Key West one of my classmates had a 914 that had spent much of it’s life in the Cleveland area… I rode along up to Miami one weekend where he made a deal to trade it in on a really sharp Chevy Luv 4×4. The next weekend I rode along to pick up the truck. At 7-Mile Bridge it started to rain a bit so we stopped to put the targa top in, which refused to drop into place – by a good couple inches – until we each grabbed a door & lifted. Good thing it rained.
It actually is not a bad price at all if your not paying someone to do it. If your paying a good quality shop to do it all, probably not. But it is as stated above they made 3500 cars. There just aren’t many out there and a Ca car without rust is a major plus. I wish I didn’t have so many waiting projects myself.
I believe it was Hans-Joachim Stuck that said the two best handling stock street cars ever made are a 914/6 and an e30 M3
I can attest to the handling. I new car prepped and worked on a number of these we sold at Alpine Porsche Audi in Colorado springs to airforce academy students in the 80s. There was an on ramp to the express way we would slam hard to test drive. A go kart on steroids, stuck like glue, no wanting to end swap like 911s. Slot car.
1970 914’s have fixed passenger seat, with an adjustable footrest. The one shown has an adjustable (fore and aft)ppassenger seat. I own one, inherited from my great aunt. Completely original, 85,000 miles. And yes,Craig. They handle like they’re stuck to the pavement with glue. California “clover” freeway on-ramps are so much fun! Nothing like taking a classic at 9/10 just because you can.
My 914/4 also cornered like a painted stripe !
Didn’t think anyone could make a car uglier than a 911 – and then VW/Porsche came out with this. The Karmann Ghia looked so much better! Even the Type 3/4? version.
Eric –
“…seat,with an adjustable…”
…some 1 is trying (or did?) make the 4 into the 6 just like the sanctioned post factory co. did…
I had a friend that raced the Porsche 906, 908 and 910 race cars. he said his street 914-6 was just as much fun and stuck to the ground like a slot car. he loved it. of the 3500 made only 5215 remain.
I had a 914/6 while stationed in Germany. Unbelievable handling and touring capabilities. Drove it all over Europe.
I traded a Sony Tiniton color television to the German owner.
I couldn’t ship this car to the U.S. or I’d still have it.
