Factory Wide Body: 1984 Porsche 911

This 1984 Porsche 911 is a rare non-Turbo factory widebody car, otherwise known by a few internal names include the M491 package or the “SSE”, the acronym for the Super Sport Equipment package. The seller has entered a typo by calling this the M91 package, which is a shame as he’s missing out on turning up in all sorts of awesome Google search results, but that’s his problem and not ours. Regardless, this M491-equipped 911 is a rare and desirable bird, and is listed here on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of $55,995.

The Turbo look spawned by the 930 turned out to be more popular than even Porsche expected, as tuners and in-home hobbyists alike began welding steel flares onto their cars in an effort to recreate the widebody look (without the Turbo price tag). In turn, Porsche began offering the widebody design as an option, and just under 500 911s came to the U.S. market in 1984 with that box checked.

Given how reliable and fun-to-drive the naturally aspirated 3.2L engine was, the combination of the stout powerplant with the widened stance makes this air-cooled a fan favorite – if you can find one. The seller has seemingly priced this one fairly, right in the sweet spot of the market for a factory widebody. The M491 cars also came with Turbo-spec suspension and brakes, along with sport bucket seats.

The mileage is impressive, as we don’t often see the special edition cars like this driven such distance – but that’s the beauty of the 3.2 Carreras. This is the generation of Porsches you can afford to own if you find a maintained example, and the seller notes this one had its transmission rebuilt in the last year. If you’re looking for a rare 911 that’s not a Turbo and likely to appreciate, this is one worth watching.

Hmm…fried egg 996 tt or this one?? I don’t know, 400hp is tempting but you just can’t beat the classic looks of the older Porsches.
