Stashed away in a barn in Indiana are five of the 200 1986 Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupes built to meet NASCAR homologation requirements. The owner had decided to part ways with their Aero Coupe collection (stash might be a better word for it) and wants to move all 5 cars at once in a package deal. The cars are in various conditions making the asking price seem a bit high at $55k, but when will you ever have another opportunity to buy 5 of these cars? Given the limited production and increased interest in G-body cars, these are only going to up in value. You can find this package deal here on eBay in Walkerton, Indiana.
The seller’s ad isn’t the easiest to understand, as they list off each car’s basic info but don’t clarify which is which in their photos. It’s possible that the photos are of just one or two of the cars, but when they are all the same color, it’s hard to tell. There is one photo of a black and rust Cutlass with the Hurst/Olds 15th Anniversary logo on the back and an Aero Coupe rear window sitting on it, but there’s no word on what its story is or if it’s for sale too.
Chevy had been racing the G-body in Nascar for years, but the aging design wasn’t the most aerodynamic. To reduce drag, they shorted the trunk lid, extended the rear deck and installed a more sloped rear window. It only reduced drag a little, but winning by a little is still winning. NASCAR required Chevy to build and sell 200 cars with the changes, but they ended up building 6,052 more in ’87. On the street, you aren’t going to notice any performance difference between an Aero Coupe and a standard Monte Carlo SS, but the moment you get out of the car you will notice the difference and so will everyone at the car show!
It sounds like several of these cars are serious projects, while one or two might be nice enough to clean up and start driving. Price guides show #4 condition cars are worth about $10k, so the seller’s $11k per car average might not be too far off. It really will come down to how rusty each car is and if any unique Aero bits are missing. So would you like to be the only person in the world that owns 5 of the original Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupes?
The black and rust one looks like a cutlass to me.
It’s hard to tell for sure from that photo, but looking closer at the tail lights, I think you are right!
I believe it is a Cutlass, but they never came with the aero rear window like that. There were only Aero Monte Carlo’s & Pontiac’s GP to my knowledge. It looks to me like the seller had an extra rear window and just sat it on the trunk lid.
It’s an Olds.
You mean the one that has a “Hurst Olds” decal on the trunk and Olds tail lights?
I think that picture slipped in. The guy says in his ad all 5 cars are the same color combination: White ext/maroon int.
He’s got a few other cars so the Olds is probably one of them.
Black one is definitely a Cutlass that someone sat an aerocoupe rear window on the trunk.
yeah. the window is just sitting on the trunk. you can see the bubble in the tint and the defroster on the back class of the hurst
Yes, it you look at the picture, you can see the trunk lines like usual. The glass is just sitting on top of the trunk lid. Interesting appearance and illusion.
“these are only going to go up in value”
Maybe, maybe not.
Another bad choice by a would be collector.
All five might be worth 35K max.
Less common than the regular Monte SS.
Less attractive than the regular Monte SS.
Just 5 32yr old chevys.Seller will never recoup his original purchase price…sorry
Well that’s 4 to many for me.
Ugly when new, and these only got worse.
That’s your lousy opinion. I love all old cars and wouldn’t be snobbish enough to call them ugly. Now new cars which all look like plastic bubbles may qualify for that. Why not just move on instead of coming here with your negativity?
He is asking $11,000 a piece for fixer uppers.
I know for a fact they don’t sell for that much, so good luck to him.
I don’t know where that price guide gets its numbers from, but they are way off.
There haven’t been enough cars sold in all conditions to get the prices they claim.
They can’t take a #1 cars price and just deduct a certain percentage to get to the lesser cars. It doesn’t work like that.
I know where you can get a 13,000 mile Aero Coupe for $15,000 right now.
$11,000 for a fixer upper is crazy.
I’m about sure I’d rather have the $15,000 13K Aero Coupe Miguel mentioned than all 5 of these.
Here is another ad from the sale seller. He wants $45,000 for 39 cars.

Now 5 cars are worth $55,000. Seems crazy to me.
Bought a 1987 Monte Aerocoupe new. The 87 was the better year of these coupes. They still had the HO 305. 1988 got the same 305’s that were in Grandmas Monte Carlo. The Pontiac 2+2’s were even more limited to under 700 produced. They were all gone when I went to get my Monte.
Did you like the car after you had it for a while?
I can only disseminate 3 of the 5 cars called for, so I wonder which is “mint” and which is “real nice”.
My brother had a Monte Carlo. He parked it out in front of my Mom’s house where he had always parked it..he lived upstairs. He came back down the next morning and it was gone. He called the cops and they said that they had an idea where it was.. sure enough it was about 50 miles away in an alley.. well some of it was..
Did y’all look at the last photo in the eBay listing? Anybody who puts a screen shot of a complaint (whether toward him or by him) on his eBay page for all the world to see is just asking for trouble. I can’t tell from the text, but either way there is a moron in the mix that is hoarding Monte’s and hoping to put a down payment on a house.
I own 2 maroon 85&86 SScoupes the areocoupe does nothing for me I would only take one if you gave it to me asking price is way out of the ballpark for a fixer upper good luck is all I can say
I wonder what a brand new never sold aerocoupe would bring? About 10 years ago I came across several of these cars among others that were new leftover stock and the the dealer just rolled em into his mini storage around the block and forgot about them. I’m not sure exactly of how many aerocoupes were there, but it was severalalong with Chevy trucks and other earlier Monte Carlo S.and Old military vehicles. At that time the small town dealer was still in business but surely by now he’s gone out. For a car guy it was a once in lifetime thing to witness. Goes to show us you never know what’s behind the next garage door or around the next corner.
I use to dream of owning a Monte Carlo SS in high school and even after joining the Army I wanted one. There was sergeant that had a black 1987 Monte SS that when he let me borrow it,I felt like a king.Even though I never owned a Monte SS,Hurst Olds /442, or the Pontiac GP 2+2, I ended with the bad one that’s sitting in my driveway right now.The Buick Grand National.
I’ve sold this guy parts. Nice guy and very knowledgeable. But his items are always WAY overpriced and never wants to give you anything for your items. A clear example is at hand.
I wouldn’t own one but I think they are pretty. Especially when compared to the bubbles of today. Anyone who calls these ugly is a snob who is probably 70+ years old and ready to be buried in their 55 Chevy.
Hey easy Derek, I’ve got a 55 :-) I love the Aerocoupes. I had a 78 Caprice Classic 2dr. with about the same bent rear window. Love that look
