Full of Holes: 1970 VW Bus Danbury Conversion

The seller of this 1970 VW Bus pulls no punches, letting potential bidders know it is quite rusty. Actually, he goes a step further and offers one of my favorite descriptions ever read on eBay: “So full of holes you could chuck it in the sea and use it as a net.” Honesty like that is hard to find, and this is basically a parts Bus at this point. As a Danbury conversion, however, it likely has lots of good cabin features to offer up for owners of Buses looking to fashion their own camper. Find it here on eBay in the U.K. with bids to just over $500.

You can see one of the biggest holes in the body just to the left of the license plate, above the tail lamp. Yes, this Bus has been sitting by the sea (or in the sea) for quite some time, and its camping days are likely long behind it. The good news is, as the trend of building your own camper continues to pick up steam, vintage conversion vans like this one will offer up all sorts of useful bits like sinks, beds, and more. They may be disgusting, but for the current bid, it could be worth the risk of just needing a thorough cleaning.

The interior looks much better than the outside, though it’s impossible to know if water intrusion has been a factor. This Bus does have the pop-top roof, which always makes dampness a potential problem (not to mention the non-existent window seals). Danbury still makes conversion vans today, building some of the coolest road-going campers you can buy – except, here in the states, we can’t. They’re exclusively for customers in Europe, and I’ve not seen any chatter about opening up a U.S. distribution network.

The seller doesn’t rule out restoration given the high state of originality, but it would seemingly be a nonsensical attempt at saving a Bus they made thousands of. If anything, the current bid still makes it a worthwhile purchase for parting out, swapping what you need onto your Bus and selling off the bits you don’t need. The seller notes that given the angle it’s parked at, you should count on bringing some heavy equipment (and friends) to get it moved. Between the holes and the labor, this Bus is going to test someone’s love of vintage campers.

That is one rotten bus! Love the fish bowl left headlight…Definately proves that UK is not the best place to pick an old car from.
Had an almost identical 70 VW Dormobile(also a UK conversion) camper many years back, in FAR better condition. One should REALLY desire a Danbury tribute camper to meet sellers terms and strip this one…too far gone
