Garage Find 1958 Corvette 4-Speed!

Love them or hate them, there’s no denying that the guys at Gullwing Motor Cars find some pretty interesting vehicles. Right now they are offering several garage/barn find cars, including this sweet Corvette. And at $49,500 it isn’t all that overpriced when you look at what some of the projects Corvettes have been selling for lately. They claim this garage find is in very original condition and has been off the road since 1971. It’s going to need restoration work but appears to be a decent starting point if you have been looking for a V8 powered C1 to restore. And it’s packing some desirable features, such as the hardtop and 4-speed transmission. You can find it here on Gullwing Motor Cars and you can view more photos of it here on Flickr.

When it comes to desirable classics, we tend to take claimed mileage and originality with a grain of salt. Without a closer look and some further investigation, it’s hard to say how original this Corvette is. And there’s always the question of whether any of that matters given condition. Take the interior, what is present very well maybe original, but I’m fairly certain that the seats didn’t feature duct tape when it left the factory.  At least it’s complete and all the major components appear to be restorable.

There’s no word on the condition of the engine, but I’d guess it currently isn’t running. They also don’t state if this is the original engine or not, but it appears to be a 283 V8. The single carburetor would suggest that it’s the base 230 horsepower version, but more investigating would be recommended. It’s paired to a 4-speed, which is a major plus and would make this one fun machine to drive if you are able to get it back on the road.

I sure would love to know more about this car’s history and options. Things like power windows, HD suspension, and engine trim can sure make a huge impact on value. Clearly, someone really enjoyed this car, as it’s showing 82k miles. I’ll admit that I would be surprised if this car really is as original as the seller claims, but maybe there’s always a chance that the drivetrain and paint are original. And that possibility is what makes this one worth a closer look!

Gullwing Motor Cars is notorious for offering baskets of rust for 5 figures. Check their Hemmings listings sometime, and you tell me. Oh, they have some beauties, but also alot of junk, and at prices that are insane.$49,500 for this, and it needs a complete frame-off? Thanks, but at that price, you’d end up with $165K into a $75K car. Not exactly cost efficient.

It looks like it’s a pretty complete and original 58, but $50K, I don’t think so.

Given all the warnings of rust I would have expected to see a disaster in the engine compartment, but the black metal looks to be, well, black. $50K seems like a lot and I’m no expert. The car is worth what someone will pay for it and while it’s convenient to blame the sellers (who are all flippers by definition) it’s the buyers who set the price.

I happen to believe that ’58-’60 Corvettes are stylistically the most desirable of the breed, followed by the ’56-’57. This one really doesn’t look too bad and there’s certainly no overt threat of rust.

As a car I’d love to have it. Just don’t think I love it for $50K.

Is that Russian Blue cat available? They’re as good as having an orange tabby.

For C1’s, 58-62 are the most beautiful IMO. This one looks fairly complete but at a price. I think it was last year at the MSRA show there was a black one listed for sale for $80-$90K IIRC. Assuming you wanted it show quality you’ll easily have that much tied up in it if not more IMO before you get it done. I’m sure someone will buy it, but unless bought for a driver I’m afraid they’ll be disappointed with what it will cost to get it all into shape.

Jeez, Louise…these folks can just bite me. The ad leaves so much out they might just as well posted pictures only. Hmmm, where to start…”with factory hardtop”. It appears to have come with a “factory soft top”…but is it there? I guess the crossed flags before the cove were too gaudy and filled in. Love the matching color on the wheels. And I’m sure they are the correct wheels to keep the hubcaps from flying off at speed. The engine? Yup, it’s a SBC. Correct???
C’mon, write some information or don’t place the ad. $50k? Wow. $35-40 and you will still be upside down for years.
    Ok, I’m done.

There is one just like this at a dealers shop in Maine. Been sitting there for many years. It is a “customer’s car” and NOT FOR SALE. Someday I bet the owner will decide to sell it, or perhaps pass on without enjoying his dream car.

Nope on price. Go buy a running restored 63-67 Corvette for more or less in dollars and enjoy!

Ike… Don’t have to like what Gullwing has helped do to the specialty car hobby market. Used to be nice picking up someone’s hobby car and having fun with it.

My favorite year Corvette and a four speed as a bonus. I’d love to find out the history on it.
