Garaged For Years: 1955 Pontiac Star Chief Hardtop

b1

Everyone knows about 1955 Chevrolets, but there were other neat cars the General produced that year as well. This 1955 Pontiac Star Chief doesn’t have much of a history, although the staging outside of the barn in the background is pretty cool looking! It has been stored for a while, perhaps even in that building, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. A no reserve auction has been started here on eBay by the family of the deceased owner.

From this view the longer wheelbase of the Pontiac (versus the Chevrolet) is clear. This car looks remarkably nice; I’m surprised the car looks to be in this nice shape without the family knowing any details. As the Star Chief was one of the top of the line cars for Pontiac in 1955, there’s a lot of fancy trim here. If you like that kind of ornamentation, this may be the car for you–it’s certainly more distinctive than a tri-five Chevy!

b3

The nose of the Pontiac is a little busy for me, along with the then-traditional Pontiac “waterfalls” down the hood. I can’t say I’m a fan of the little eyebrows over the headlights either, but they are certainly distinctive. And the hood ornament? Wow! The paint certainly looks nice as well.

b4

The interior is seriously cool, with the metal panels on the doors taking the cake.

b6

While the rear seat is worn, I think a good cleaning and reconditioning of the leather would certainly make it look better. Unfortunately, I’m guessing the front seat doesn’t look as good and that’s why we don’t get pictures of it.

b5

If this is indeed the original engine, it’s a 287 cubic inch V8. The seller tells us that the engine runs well and the car “can be driven now.” What I see is a really nice car, probably an older restoration, that’s spent a number of years being stored just waiting for someone to take it and drive it. I also see a car that I’d love to have in my garage! It’s currently significantly below the value guide I found; it will be interesting to see where the auction ends up–what do you think this one’s worth, and would you rather have the rarer Pontiac or the beloved Chevrolet?

Looks fantastic, but imagine how much better it would look if it was a four door without that hideously long boot.

My grandfather had one of these in green and white. I was 10 at the time but I was already a Studebaker guy.

Looks like someone like stars. There have been two added on the front fenders above the wheel arch. They’re also crooked. But I’d still love to own it.
