Go-Go Pony: 1969 AMC Javelin SST

What isn’t there to love about Pony cars? They offer great looks, lots of power, and good performance, but sadly they also are typically pricey. The AMC Javelin might be one of the most underappreciated Pony cars, which means these great cars can usually be had for a bargain. This 1969 AMC Javelin SST is a survivor car and has only seen 28,000 miles. It can be found in Lake Grove, NY or here on eBay.

AMC offered several engines in the Javelin, all the way from a 232 straight six up to a 390 cui V8. This car has the smallest V8 that was offered, the 290 cui. The 290 produces a respectable 220 hp and allowed the Javelin to reach a top speed of 100 mph. This engine might not be the most powerful, but it sounds great and its bullet proof.

The SST option added several comfort and appearance features to the car, such as reclining front seats, wood grain trim, and a sportier steering wheel. This car’s interior looks nice and we love the white and plaid upholstery. It just needs a good cleaning and an owner to enjoy it.

This car looks great, but would be more desirable in one of the “Big Bad” colors or if it had the Go Package. However, if you are just looking for a solid driver to enjoy on a budget, this car would be the perfect choice. The heating and cooling systems are the biggest issues we see with this car, but it could still be driven enjoyed as is.

If your still not sold on the Javelin, check out this AMC ad from 1969. By the end of it we are sure it will have you wanting a Javelin, or maybe just a yacht to go Go-Go dancing on with all your friends. Special thanks to Scot C for sharing this find.

I saw my first Javelin at Elkhart Lake, in 67 on display pre-introduction. I thought it very attractive, I also have some pictures of a race in 69 at Meadowdale, where they did quite well. Nice car, I hope it goes to someone who will drive it.

My dad had a ’69 with the 232. Someone mentioned hitting 100 plus in that one. That 220 HP and 100 mph top was an understatement to keep insurance costs down.

I absolutely love the AMX from that year. This is pretty nice though.

Great looking car, very clean styling, still looks good to my eye after all these years. I remember a green one sitting by the fence in a tow lot in my hometown years ago, utterly ignored because it wasn’t a Camaro or Mustang (hardly anyone gave a rat’s hindquarters for Mopar in my hometown, and AMC was an even more distant fourth). It’s another one of those cars that I could have jumped on for pennies, but never did. Sigh.

I posted on facebook previously today. I drove an AMC Javelin @ Daytona Beach Speedway in th ’70 s. It was in the Grand American Series in FEB ’72 ‘7 ? I qualified 3rd fastest on the first day of qualifying. They paid the top 5 for first day qualifying, this was a thrill to get a podium qualifying position out of 5 tries @ Daytona/ I loved all road courses that I drove [ DAYTONA , ROAD ATLANTA etc.. I have also took laps @ V.I.R. this past year in my restored ’36 Plymouth Race/Street Rod. I have run laps @ Mid-Ohio, and Mid-America. I would like some more info about this car. J I M

~ i keep going back to view this gem, and like it better each time. i wouldn’t meddle with a thing, but the great stuff about AMC engines, they all, 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401, in both short and tall deck, utilize a similar block. so you can easily preserve the original number matching motor if you decide to hotrod it (please don’t) and few would know. the bidding is way too short for the true value from a 100% seller. you aren’t so spoiled you’re going to give it away, are you, overdriven?
