Grandpa’s Square Body: 1987 Chevrolet Blazer

The decision to sell a vehicle that has been in your family for some time is never easy. Personally, I don’t know if I could do it. The owner of this original 1987 Chevrolet K5 Blazer is the grandson of the gentleman who bought it new, and he claims that it has been maintained since Day 1. It is clearly unrestored with paint damage on the hood and rear gate, but it still looks incredibly honest and with a lot of eyeball appeal owing to that red-and-white color combo. The truck is listed here on eBay with bids to just over $9,000 and no reserve. The Blazer is located in Surprise, Arizona, which likely means it’s a rust-free truck.

The Blazer looks correct as heck on its OEM rally wheels and white-letter radials. The fact that it’s in Arizona makes the paint damage more plausible, and really, the blemishes aren’t that bad. I would be sorely tempted to see if you could correct the finish on the gate and the hood as the sides of the truck still seem to present quite well. Red with a white hard top is a great look and I’m curious if that hard top was ever removed. Given how hot it can get in Arizona (I know, it’s a dry heat), it may not have been all that tempting to pull the roof off. The seller indicates they have all the maintenance receipts, which would be a huge asset for the next owner to grab.

This being an Arizona truck, some sun damage is inevitable. The interior has some wear and tear but nothing I’d lose my shirt about. The driver’s seat could use some upholstery work but the rest of the cabin looks quite decent. This color upholstery would likely clean up well with a steam cleaning and carpet extractor. The windows appear to have some mild tint on them, which likely played a role in the dash not being blown apart and the console still presenting well. The seller doesn’t report whether the air conditioning works, but I would suspect in Arizona it would be a priority to keep it in good order.

The Blazer has a 350 under the hood which is an incredibly dependable and dirt-cheap motor to live with. Hopefully, the records the seller mentions include evident of belt changes and fresh fluids. The backseat looks like it was hardly used and the paint on the inner tailgate suggests it wasn’t left down for rough materials to be carelessly slid across. While we’d like to see some more details in the listing, the no-reserve auction and the clean cosmetics – along with the long-term family ownership – all make this Blazer seem like a truck worth bidding on and preserving for the long haul.

Dang, that’s a really nice truck. I would love to have this, BUT these get the absolute worst gas mileage, even though fuel injection helps a bit. I think I got about 12-14 mpg on the freeway, but gas was anywhere from .99 to 1.25 at the time. I wouldn’t want to feed this monster with today’s prices. Nice truck.

The common fix for that was to pull the full time hubs off and replace them with a set of Warn Hubs, while it was never going to give great mileage it did improve it enough to justify the cost

I bought an 89 V Blazer new, after replacing the hubs I bumped my fuel economy up to 17 in town ( I lived in a rural but mountainous area) and 22 on the interstate, figures that I had no problem living with. Most, if not all of this era had the 3.07 rear axle.

I currently own an 89 K5 Blazer. Great truck.it’s my second K5. The first one, a 76, had a small block 400 and I was lucky to get 10mpg, but it would go anywhere. This one has a Jasper engine in it, a 350, and it’s up around 17-18mpg.
If it only had a diesel motor in it, I’d be even happier with it.
