Griz Pride! 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis Wagon

m1

It looks like this 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis wagon has been used as a tailgating vehicle for University of Montana games, complete with “Griz Pride” bug deflector on the front. However, underneath the burgundy and silver lies a pretty decent vehicle for not a lot of money. It’s listed here on eBay with a buy-it-now of $2,975 or make a lower offer.

Now, if you happen to be a Grizzly fan, maybe you wouldn’t change the decoration of this large wagon. However, most of us I suspect would prefer a change. It looks like the bear claws and lettering are vinyl, so they should come off easily. You can see a few dents and dings looking around this huge wagon, like the one in the front bumper above.

There’s also some rust, as you can see by this picture. The seller’s assertion that these are the original wheel covers is incorrect as well (Dodge Diplomat, I think?) However, if this car goes for something less than the buy-it-now figure, this may be a really good deal. The tires look nice, and there’s a spare pair of studded tires as well.

The car is fully equipped, with power windows, locks, seat, cruise control, air conditioning and a third row seat. You can see from this shot that it was originally either a pale yellow or light tan. The interior looks to be in serviceable condition; I certainly wouldn’t change much. I think this could be both a usable and neat entry-level classic, maybe replacing the minivan in a family?

Of course, with a 460 under the hood, maybe it’s replacing a pickup truck instead! With what look like relatively new hoses, belts, wires and ignition components, I’m hoping this Grizzly of a vehicle has been maintained well. I’d sure rather have it than a minivan! great vehicle for towing, and enough room to haul stuff home from the home improvement store. loose the bug shield, as it will affect the windshield wipers at speed, and loose the bear paws, or it will look like bear scat. not a bad buy it now price, but I think if seller wants a quick sale come down to $2500 on the buy it now price.

Looks like a “Bondo Buggy” to me. Got rust? No problem, grind it down, throw some screen mesh over it, and slather on the Bondo until you can’t see it once painted. Next rust hole, repeat ……………………………….
    Just MHO.
