Hasn’t Left The Barn: 1964 Pontiac Catalina

Catalina

We don’t have a clear picture of this interesting find from Robert R., because it hasn’t left the barn yet! You can find this 1964 Pontiac Catalina in Terre Haute, Indiana and it’s advertised here on craigslist for $2,000 or best offer. One of the first toys I remember having as a kid was a Matchbox Pontiac with these same vertical dual headlights, and I always liked them. This one is said to be totally complete; I’ll add that some iron oxide has replaced some of the original sheet metal for sure! I’m not sure whether it would make economic sense to bring this one back, but I hate to see complete cars broken up for parts, so I hope someone decides to put it back on the road. It is a two-door hardtop and features a small block V8 that isn’t frozen. Would you be up for resurrecting this find?

I’m quite surprised. Usually the pics in the barn usually come with an unrealistic asking price.

Lots of decent photos for a Craigslist ad especially given the surroundings.

To much rust. At best a parts car, and needs to be priced accordingly. Maybe a thousand dollars. Maybe not.

Not sure what a small block in a Pontiac is? I thought all were 389s or 421s in the big sedans?

      326 would be my guess

In the full size line for Pontiac in 1964 the engine options were limited to a 389 Cu. In. and a 421 Cu. In. The horsepower was regulated through various carburetor configurations and different camshafts. However, I believe the same block was used for the 326 as the other engines so, “Small Block” doesn’t really enter into it.

Sadly, this one has gone past its restoration potential in my opinion.

In 1971 I moved my sister from New Orleans to our Home in Chicago area and I drove her 64 Catalina with a 389 all the way and those cars are nice highway cars. Yes if it’s what he calls a small block it most likely is a 326 because the motor shown doesn’t look anywhere near like the 389 in her car.. Too rusty to restore so part her out.

For ’64 the 326 was only available in the Tempest. All full size Pontiacs came with the 389 or 421 engines. The only difference between the 326 and 389 is bore size. They are the same block and should not look different.

Ed is right there was no small block Pontiac until the 301 came out in 77. All Pontiac V8’s before 1977 were big blocks. and all Pontiac 1977 and later were small blocks, 301’s and 265’s

Pontiac even made a 4 cylinder engine in the early ’60’s that used the 389’s block in modified form. I suppose that is a ‘big block’ engine also!!
