Hot Hauler: 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS

It is hard to not love a tough looking pickup. A tough looking pickup with a big-block under the hood is just the icing on the cake. This tough looking 1990 Chevrolet C/K is listed for sale here on eBay. It is located in Buhl, Idaho, and is offered with a clear title. At the time of writing, bidding had reached $5,499 but the reserve has not been met.

The seller states that this pickup is basically original and that the only deviation from original is the exhaust. The body is straight and in good condition. There are a few tiny chips and scratches on the Onyx Black paint and some wear in the tray, but the fact is that this is a 28-year-old pickup, so these should be expected as par for the course. Regardless, it does present really well, and that nose-down stance looks really aggressive.

The Garnet Red interior presents really well, especially for a pickup of this age. Everything appears to be in good condition, and there doesn’t appear to have been any aftermarket modifications made to the vehicle. The seller holds a reasonable amount of documentation for this Chevy which includes the original order paperwork and the window sticker.

Now we’re getting to the business end of the deal. That 454ci big-block pumps out 230 hp and is backed by a TH-400 transmission. It all looks very clean under here, and once again it is free of any aftermarket tweaks. The seller states that the car starts, runs and drives really well and that it feels really tight. He also claims that the truck has covered 82,000 original miles. While I would hope that there is some documentation to verify this, in my opinion, it gives the appearance of being an original pickup that has traveled those sorts of miles.

As you may have already guessed, I really like this pickup. Even as a blue-blooded Ford man, I find the idea of a Chevrolet Pickup sporting a big-block under the hood to be an attractive proposition. Looking at current market values and sales, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if bidding on this pickup doubles before the auction ends.

454 engine, no overdrive transmission, no fuel injection, mpg in the cellar. 230 HP
I’m sold on it. I’m in.

I could never understand why Chevrolet only built these 454’s to only 230 H.P.
Granted, the offered a lot of torque, but 230 H.P. out of 454 c.i. isn’t that impressive in my opinion. Sales would have been much higher, I would think, if they put out in the 450 H.P. range, or even higher. Never gonna get good gas mileage out of it anyhow, so why not???

No American car manufacturers were making cars with anything close to 400hp in 1990, let alone 450. At that point in time they were still 15+ years away, it wasn’t until a new generation of engines, fuel injection and electronic controls came along that they started to mass produce cars with that that sort of power.

It would have been nice, and would have sold more units, but if wasn’t feasible.

It is simple when you understand the GM theory. It is called the Corvette. The gray hairs protected it as their flagship. If you offered a mega horsepower pickup what would that do? Hey had the development to do so. They had the parts on the shelf. Doing so would hurt Corvette sales and tarnish it’s reputation.

These trucks new were a joke on anyone who purchased them and thought they were going to the drag strip. Nothing more but a big block motor in a truck chassis and some decals. Wrapped in a plain package that you could get with a V6. Dodge got away with it in 1978 and 1979 because of forward thinking and mainly because someone still wanted to go fast. They had no performance car. Which If I were to bet on a race the Dodge would be the first at the end of the strip against this performance poser.

Dad had a new one, looked so cool. He was diehard Chevy, but unfortunately it was a complete dud. All that motor with a TH400 and low gear just made it whine on the highway going nowhere fast. All while guzzling fuel like no tomorrow. That being said, I’d love to have one but only after planning a bunch mods and money to make run like it looks.

What’s not to love about this truck? Like the man says HP can be tweaked. These GM’s offer an astounding ride like no other. For me I just prefer a long bed and not sure if this model was offered with an 8 footer. Had a v6 WT with auto and AC some years ago and still hard pressed to say I have owned better.

So many people bought these trucks, thinking they were a great investment and one day would be collectable. As far as I know, it didn’t happen. However, I too would like to have this truck, but I think 10K would be the magic number for me, anything more ,it would not be cost effective IMO.

I’ve said it before…I Love my 98 gmc, the 305 still sings with 205k on the clock, and I don’t have to look at a RED interior…

Now if it was a Ford with a 460???? Oh yeah, you tried that a couple of days ago and all we got from the barn find readers–I do not think many of them actually own a car===all we got was a bunch of sucky expertise about poor mileage. Who cares, I still prefer the Ford because it has more chrome. Enough said. Morley

A truck needn’t be black to look aggressive. Here’s my 2004 short bed diesel. I’ve had several offers for it, and it’s not even for sale. People love the extended cab trucks no one makes anymore. They also love the Leer tonneau cover.

A 454 SS is a rare find, these trucks were Corvette’s with a truck bed on it. The sound system was excellent. This is one rig I’m going to go and look at, its only 25 miles away from me.

At the time of the creation of the 454 SS, Dodge was producing a truck called the SRT-10, Which was a Viper with a truck body, still the fastest production pick up truck ever built. GM and Chevy cranked up the 454SS to compete. A original with few mods is worth right at an easy $10k, less if there is cosmetic damage. I have yearned to own such a truck and since its in my backyard nearly I’m going after it.

Not quite. The SRT-10 didn’t come out until 2004, nearly 15 years after the introduction of the 454 SS.

That’s why the SRT-10 came out to compete with the Ford Lightning and Chevy’s 454 SS, it was called by trade press as the pick up performance wars.

If anyone cares to look at ebay completed listings a true 454 SS Chevy truck running and driving recently sold in Ohio for under $700.

One would think those SS decals would command more even for a running condition 4 truck. That is the state of the union.
