Imported SUV: 1994 Mazda Proceed Marvie

In the current automotive market, SUVs (and especially crossover SUVs) are the most popular segment among buyers, but I’d like to think that most automotive enthusiasts aren’t fond of the bland, generic, and often bulbous-looking crossovers that nearly every manufacturer produces these days. Quite frankly, SUVs of the past weren’t as cushy and road-oriented as current ones, and this 1994 Mazda Proceed Marvie that’s available here on Craigslist is a worthwhile example of a unique SUV.

This Proceed Marvie is available in Fulton, Maryland with a clean title in the seller’s name. Though the vehicle was exclusive to the Japanese market when new, the seller claims they are the second owner of the vehicle, and they have full import documentation and service records. Interestingly, the Proceed is essentially the same as the B-Series pickup that Mazda sold in the United States, and the Marvie name distinguishes this as the SUV body style of the Proceed truck.

On the outside, this truck looks similar to its American counterpart – even sporting B2600i badges on both of the front fenders. However, the rear of the SUV is very interesting – it almost looks like a crew cab B-Series with a bed cap, but there’s a large window for the third-row passengers. Which brings me to another interesting point – this SUV can seat seven passengers!

There aren’t any noticeable issues with the uncomplicated interior. The grey cloth upholstery looks nice and the dashboard material has no cracks.

Under the hood, there’s a 2.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, which pairs to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-wheel-drive system. The odometer displays 186,239 kilometers, which translates to just under 116,000 miles.

The seller hopes to get $6,750 for this Proceed Marvie, and they are not entertaining any trades. Could you see yourself owning this rugged Japanese-market SUV?

Great example of what a SUV should be, something rugged enough to take off road and be taken off road. This being based on a pickup truck is much like early Toyota 4 Runner’s which were based on a pickup truck and looked a lot like one.

Most of the so-called SUVs today are nothing but different shaped soccer mom vehicles. They will never be taken off road and most of them are not rugged enough to be taken off road.

Toyota 4 runners were always truck based, even brand new ones are body on frame…

Very true but the early 1 were constructed in a way that you could still tell they were a pickup truck that was upgraded. The new ones are nothing but a fluff Mobile that’s nowhere near as capable as the earlier versions were. I have a 98′ that didn’t have much of the bells and whistles that they are installing now.

I bought an ’86 4Runner new and it took a beating up in the hills of NJ.

Now this one being RHD is a turn off. Not my cup of tea…..

Sweet looking truck. I remember when Mazda trucks looked like this. It’s a shame this version wasn’t sold in the USA.
