Jury Duty: 1979 Chrysler Cordoba 300

Attention all units, attention all units, this is dispatch. For sale is a white, 1979 Chrysler Cordoba 300. The suspect is located in Lexington, Massachusetts. Height; 52.6 inches, weight; 3,700 pounds. Caught currently at a registered distance of 27,730 miles on the odometer. Those currently in custody of suspect are asking $12,500 here on eBay, but are willing to negotiate with an offer. Thank you Adam C for the tip.

Impersonating an officer is not a good thing or a wise choice. In this case, it is hard to tell what is true or not on this vehicle. The listing says this car is equipped with the E58 Police Package 360. That should be a 360 cubic inch V8. However, connected to that is a claimed 727 Torque-flight automatic transmission. There were only 100 E58 models produced, so it is very hard to discern what is real and fake in this situation.

The interior is an incriminating red leather. While it is clean, the listing states that the two spoke steering wheel is part of the E58 package. Beyond that, it does have a laundry list of options including; air conditioning, power windows, power reclining seats, power locks, cruise control, rear defrost, digital clock, and delayed wipers just to name a few. It is also important to note that the car has been repainted.

Have you come to a verdict yet? There are a lot of attention grabbers in this listing. The VIN is listed in the ad, so you could, in fact, run it through the system and see what is original to the car. That would help in determining if all is true and if it is worth the asking price. A first generation Cordoba criminal should not spoil all the next generations. Although, the current 300, and Chrysler, in general, have done that themselves.

Police package or not, if it doesn’t have “fine Corinthian leather” ..no deal…My sister had a ’79 with wire wheels and a 318,also with red interior, but I think it had a bench seat. Sharp looking car, but the torque converter gave out on a back road and that was all she wrote.

Ricardo Montalbán appeared in so many plays, TV shows and movies yet to car people he will always be the pitchman who said that famous phrase. I also wonder if the ad’s copywriter had any idea that phrase would be around 40years later.

And Ricardo actually did drive and enjoy his Cordoba.

The guy doesn’t know what he talking about. With the A74 pkg (300) you were not able to get the power seat. The 2-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel only came when the car came with the optional tilt wheel, otherwise the standard steering wheel was a 3-spoke. All A74 came with a 360 rated at 195 horsepower.

This was a low time for Chrysler. I had a friend that bought one of these new. It was at the dealers being repaired more then it was on the road. After two years he sold it, and was glade to see it go.

The last years of carbureted engines smothered in plumbing were not good times for any car maker. Or driver.

The VIN does come back as the high performance 360, also that it was built in Canada.

Built in Canada you say? Ah, that explains the premium price. Not rusty (add 50% markup for being rarer than fuzzy dice in a Mercedes) and dressed in red and white (practically unobtanium level Canadiana there, boys)

Don’t look now but EVERY Cordoba, ’75 and newer Charger SE, Magnum and Mirada were built in Windsor.

I suppose we just can’t get through a Cordoba post without the leather comments. Like Corvairs and Nader, or exploding Pintos. Aside from it’s dismal engine compartment( I think there’s a motor in there), this a darn nice car!

My 1980 Dodge Mirada – the worst car I ever owned – had ‘Corinthian leather’ seats. It was very soft… and not much thicker than a Kleenex. My 2005 Lexus OTOH has leather seats made of the stuff you’d find on a chair in some rich guy’s den or library.

I think it was actually “rich Corinthian leather”!

My mom had a 76, 79 and an 81. The 79 didn’t last so long and the 81 had a 6 cylinder ( so slow) the 76 was incredible, even without the leather

If memory serves, 3,811 300 packages made. Bought one new with sunroof. All were white with red leather. White rubber bumper pads. 175 sunroofs and 175 T-tops. Cornering was excellent. Think all had 3.23 gears, auto. Only issue I ever had, alternator bracket broke twice under warranty. Sold in 82 with 17,000 miles. Was a fun car.

Canuck car for sure with Speedo in Kilometres as well as MPH.

As usual when a Mopar is advertised without the DATA plate or a picture of it on fender, then anything is in doubt.

Actually all cars sold in the US that year had mph and kph speedometers with president Jimmy Carter’s failed push to the metric system…

Ricardo pronounced it: rich corinthian “Lather”. I had a ‘78, Black, with the red “lather”. Electronic ignition module failed a lot. It went over 200,000 miles, died, and was sold to the gardener for $500.

I owned an ’79 300 years ago. Nice but not as nice looking as my ’79 Dodge Magnum GT. Yes it has the T-tops and E-58 Police package.

I wanted one of those with a 400, T Tops, dark blue outside w/o vinyl top, and black bucket interior. By the time I was ready to buy, Dodge was pushing the Mirada instead. Biggest POS I ever bought. Always wished I’d gotten the Magnum.

The “L” engine code from the VIN is the police interceptor E58 360. For those of you who take exception to the car being built in Canada, know that ALL Cordobas regardless of model year were built in Canada as were Charger SEs, Magnums and Miradas. It’s what the plant did. This car is heavily optioned. Crank windows, manual door locks, three spoke fixed steering wheel and a puny AM radio were standard. Other than not having a sunroof or t-roofs, this car has about as much in it as you could get in a ’79 300. Is it worth $12500? Not in the condition it’s in. But spotlessly clean under the hood, and underneath could be, if it’s a true low mileage car. And ALL speedometers displayed both Imperial and Metric speed. Which ever method was predominant on the speedo (in this case mph) determines what market the car was built for. The “production” numbers quoted are actually only the number of cars SOLD in the U.S. It doesn’t include cars sold in Canada or any that were built/sold for export. Funny that during the repaint someone chose to remove the tire changing sheet from the underside of the decklid. Have to wonder why that was done…….. And Pete is correct about his Magnum GT. Those cars are FAR rarer than any flavour of 300.

If I remember correctly, the hood catch and spring weren’t painted body color, but I can’t swear to that.

Correct. Neither of those pieces was on the car when it went through the paint line.
