Kicked To The Curb: 1958 Edsel Villager Wagon

1958-Edsel-Villager-Wagon

Ford may have considered Edsel a failure, but they actually sold quite a few cars. They moved a little over 63k units in 1958 which is nothing to be ashamed of. Problem is, they wanted to sell 200k. Of those sold in 1958, about 10% were wagons. Recently Andy W. was looking through his local craigslist and stumbled across this 1958 Edsel Villager listed for $2,500.

Edsel never got much respect. A few collectors are starting to take notice these days though. The convertibles may be the most desirable, but we like the wagons. The six-passenger Villager was the best seller, but they also had a nine-passenger option. The two-door version was called the Roundup and also offered room for six.

The top-of-the-line package was known as the Bermuda. It could be had in six or nine passenger configuration and came complete with stylish wood-grain look paneling. We think it looks pretty good when compared to most new cars today, but consumers just didn’t get it back then. Take a look at Edsel pages and you might just find yourself lusting after one of these much maligned classics.

Great looking car at an awesome price. If I where anywhere near this car I would likely go buy it.

Love it! Car is singing for a two tone paint job. Cars of this era had huge ashtrays – how could you drive it and not smoke?

If it was anything like our 57 Ford wagon when I was growing up the ashtrays aren’t all that big, but they still stunk. If I recall, I think the Edsel also had the transmission shift buttons in the hub of the steering wheel on some models.

Better have him check it out and report back. Looks like it could be a bargain if the rust is not too extensive.

2500 in a heart beat, if I had the room & was living closer to it.

~ the Roundup would be the perfect partner for DRV’s new ’56 Parkview.

If that car is as clean as it looks, it is a great bargain. Most mechanical parts shared with either Ford or Mercury. Body looks great.

Not a Ford guy but I would buy this thing in a minute if it were local to me. Looks fun. Some folks don,t know that Henry’s son Edsel, had nothing to do with these cars, In fact Edsel Died in 43. Edsel (the son) was responsible for buying Lincoln, in the early 20’s and was involved in much of the design of those beautiful cars. My dad always said it was Henry that killed Edsel, with verbal abuse

“very little rust” could be a problem. Depending of your definition of very little. These are great cars and I am somewhat surprised how many have survived over the years.

Looks good indeed, especially at the price if it’s a running unit. Rust is real common in these but not that big of a deal since all of the cowl-rearward sheet-metal shares with the 57-8 Ford wagon bodies (except 58 quarters). Sadly, these cars all got rubber mats instead of carpets which, in symphony with the leaky rubber cowl-drain tubes under the dash, made a horrid moisture trap to the floorpans for guaranteed rust problems. Check to see how bad this one is carefully from underneath but some stampings available for repair. I’ve seen soooo many of these with the 2-tone treatment (which i agree it cries out for) that i really enjoy seeing one in monotone actually (except for this one’s blah-ish shade). Seems like a heckuva deal from here..

I love these cars, at one time I had 17. One of which was a 1960 Ranger Convert.
