Looking To Trade: Bond For A Backhoe

Now here’s an interesting one: a seller of a genuine Bond Bug who’d consider trading for some heavy-duty construction equipment! Listed here on craigslist for $5,000 or trades, this funky microcar was the subject of one of my favorite episodes of Wheeler Dealers (check it out here on YouTube). Here’s where this one stands out: it appears to be a rare 4-wheel conversion, as these came from the factory with a single wheel in front. Though little info is available, a company called Webster did perform the necessary work to reconfigure the body and front suspension to accommodate 2 wheels. The question is, is this the genuine article or someone’s example of garage engineering?  There’s quite a following for these quirky runabouts, and this Bond Bug needs a fanatical owner to finish the bodywork and find some original headlights. Thanks to Robert R. for the find!

Yikes. Looks like a good idea for the conversion, almost certainly a VW Beetle front suspension. If they had thought about it a little, they could have installed a shortened beam and brought the wheels in closer to almost match the rears. A new owner could do that easily, and adjust the bodywork appropriately. But not for $5K…

Could be a Kitten, Rebel or Fox under that bodywork – Reliant made plenty of four wheeled small cars to balance out their “three-pin plugs”.
