Low-Mile 5-Speed: 1988 Chevrolet Camaro Sport Coupe

Did you miss the chance for a 1980s sporty car the first time around? Well, your ship may have come in in the form of this one-owner 1988 Chevrolet Camaro available in Brimfield, MA and viewable here on craigslist. It’s yours if you meet an asking price of just $6,000, though naturally you’ll offer less. Beware, though, as the asking price has already been lowered, according to the ad. So why isn’t this handsome, original-condition car sold?

What’s not to like about this vibrant red pony car? Nothing, except maybe the engine. Peek inside the driving compartment, and you’ll see a giant cueball stick shift. Looks pretty cool, and suggests sportiness. What does it row? You look under the hood with anticipation. It’s a six. Assuming it’s the 2.8-liter variety of six-cylinder, as it would be, you’re not going to get scared by the horsepower, though it will be adequate for a few jaunts from stoplight to stoplight, if you’re not facing a 5.0-liter Mustang of similar vintage. You’ll also miss out on the guttural sound of that V8. This car is part of the third generation of Camaros, which ran from 1982-92. Were there other engine choices? Yes. Originally the Camaro came standard with a four-cylinder. The V6 became the standard engine in 1986, but on the other end of the displacement scale, various V8s could also be had up to 350-CID in this decade-long generation.

But you’re not buying just an engine. You’re buying the package that is wrapped around that mill, and this one is stunning. 62K miles have rolled past, and there’s a folder of paperwork that presumably supports the mileage claim and gives you a heads-up as to what’s been done. The claim is that the car is adult driven in the summer only. All original paint is featured, so no accidents and only the factory to thank for the shine (plus careful care).

This car will almost sear your eyeballs out with its vibrant red paint. The interior matches that boldness with crushed red velvet upholstery. (Or were we calling this “velour” by this stage?) Standard equipment is what we had come to expect by this time, no pump-them-and-hope manual brakes or break-your-shoulder manual steering, so you’re getting a car that you could jump in and use every day, or preserve like the prior owner (owners?—the claim is vague) has done. In any case, this is short money for a cool car, especially for those who live in states where a car this age is smog-exempt. Where else are you going to find this much curb appeal for mid-four-figure money?

Ive got a stripper 2011 3.7 mustang 6spd manual, w 3.31 ⚙️ gears, and exhaust added. One of the most enjoyable cars I’ve owned.
This camaro would make a fun 1st car for a teenager to learn how to drive a standard 🙌

In 1989 i walked into Albright Chevrolet ready to make a deal on an ’88 Camaro Sport just like this, V6 5 spd. Manual windows and locks. But it was sharp and my sis had an 85 sport Camaro that was bulletproof w/that 2.8. The new models were already in so these were in tbe paper for $10,888.oo delivered. I had scraped together $1500 for a dwn payment and i believe my payments were going to be around $220/month for 48 months. My dad said “you better call my insurance guy before you sign any papers.” Sure enough the BEST quote I could get as a 19 yr old for this car was $3300 a yr w/a $1000 deductible. I was deflated. Theft on these at the time was terrible. Drove across town and ended up with a 1990 Jeep Comanche 4.0, 5 spd. But to this day i want THIS car

This is cool in its basic nature. The kind of car people say they want to order today until they find out it would only save a few grand.

I think the lack of A/C is holding it back at least as much as the V6.

Got a new ’88 6000 STE for the ex. The 2.8 was not fast. This probably weighs about the same and I think the manual would help, but it’s not going to be a burn burner. I think most people who want a Camaro or Firebird want a V-8.
