Dodge produced several cool and desirable special edition models for the 3rd generation D series pickup. Special package names like Lil Red Express, Macho Power Wagon, Warlock, and the 440 powered Midnite Express to name a few. This truck is none of those, but special in its own right. Thanks goes to barnfinds reader Dickey T for the tip. Find it here on craigslist in Bennington, VT for $6,995
What makes this truck special is the condition, mileage, and arguably one of the best engines ever made. Mileage is listed at 38,000 and it looks to be accurate based on the condition. Paint looks to be in overall great condition with a few blimishs here and there. Bumper chrome is rusted and the grill has a ding this truck looks like it was loved. Dog dish hubcaps and whitewalls look great.
The only interior shot looks like a 38,000 mile truck. The bench seat is almost too good, if it hasn’t been reupolustered it must have spent its life under a seat cover. Gauges and steering wheel look original, the column shifter operates the 3 speed automatic transmission. Door panels look good given the limited view of the photo.
The step side bed defiantly adds to the retro-cool look of this truck. The rear bumper is showing some minor rust and the obivious dent but this truck is original, not perfect. There are not any engine photos in the ad, but the power plant should be the 225CI Slant Six, which is about as bulletproof as it gets. With the asking price of $6,995 this looks like a solid deal and would be a great truck for daily driving or weekend household truck duties. Drive it to the lumber/landscaping store on Saturday morning and the car show that night.
I HATE to be one of “those people” but here goes…SPELL CHECK IS YOUR FRIEND !! In this day and age there is NO excuse for all the misspelling on this site.Other than that I LOVE LOVE LOVE this site keep up the great work ! And GO with the snarky comments….
Since when did stripper trucks become worth real money?
I agree with you Miguel.
Here is what you can get for around $3500.00 where I am.
@Miguel, Where can I pick this one up for around $3500?
The truck is in Mexico.
Interior
And the other side, just to show there is no Cal Worthington side.
It is a V8 automatic by the way.
I’m not going to defend nor denigrate the sellers ask since I’m not in this specific market, the marketplace will let him know if he’s wrong. But I would imagine that a serious buyer of this type of truck who values both the conventional cab and the stepside box, particularly in the same package (I refuse to use the word “rare” in this context as that term is abused by too many sellers and dreamers) would tell you that the example you’ve shown, while probably good value on it’s own, is irrelevant as a comp since it’s a very different truck aside from brand and approximate vintage.
OK Bob, how about this one for $2150.00? V8 Automatic. I know it needs to be lowered a little bit.
My point is that people are getting crazy with their pricing for a stripped truck.
That would be a better comp Miguel, then the evaluation would move to condition, followed by a list of particulars a serious buyer is seeking.
My other point was that asking prices don’t mean that’s where the market is, many sellers almost always start out overly optimistic, as they should. You never know when a fish might bite. That being said, this ad is 24 days old, if it isn’t just a lazy seller not killing his ad if it sold, then the marketplace is sending him the message he’s not offering what real buyers are looking for. Is he paying attention? Time might tell…….
Hey Miguel, I was just browsing saw a add on a D100 Dodge side step truck and saw your your light green for $2125.00.
That is what I’m looking for, real price on a real truck that can be used as a daily runner.
My question is it still up for grabs, and are their more like the 78 D100 single front headlight models, a lil red express would be sweet but the price would be jacked, but anything that is solid and road worthy?
In New England, a 2WD (one-wheel-drive with open diff) pickup truck makes little sense.
I see a lil red express truck clone in the making or a midnight express
Nice little truck. If I had the room I’d grab it and replace the bumpers put a good coat of wax on it and drive the hell out of it. $7.000 is not bad for a truck in that shape . At least in Northern NY State.
I was just going to make a similar reply.
It’s all about location. A truck in this shape in the northeast makes sense at that price.
To ship one from another location can also be done, but you have to factor that into the cost, plus the idea that you can’t visit it in person without spending more $$.
With what would replace the bumpers?
Replace the damaged bumpers with damage free ones or have the priginals straightened and rechromed.
I own a 78 d150, and have been tracking these trucks, very difficult to find. Unfortunately, chrysler/dodge does not have production numbers so hard to determine how rare. Not many 78 100, 150, warlock or lil red expresses around in any condition.
Have the tail lights been moved on this truck?
They look really low and the right light looks to be behind the bumper.
Hey, I for one am interested in buying a truck from Mexico.
Those are great prices!
I wonder how one goes about getting it into Canada?
No way is that truck worth what they are asking for it. I’ve seen it in person and the price way off. It’s a$800.00-$1000.00 truck and even $1000.00 is high. It’s a 6cyl and the paint is a back yard captian krylon job and it needs to be completely redone.
Another case of Barrett-Jackson Syndrome. They watch the auctions on
Volocity and Discovery and then delude
themselves into believing that what they
have is worth a fortune. (Insert buzzer
sound here) Sorry folks, wouldn’t give you
any more than 2K for this truck–especially if I’d have to have it shipped to
my house or fly in and drive home. Nice
little work truvk though. Could really get
some use out of it, too bad it costs too
much.
I can’t say on the price — seems a bit high to me, but when was the last time you saw one of this vintage in this condition in the Northeast? A little bit of work on the front trim and a straightened, rechromed rear bumper and I’d love to drive this one to local shows!
The 225 Leaning Tower of Power was a solid engine, but man, did I ever hate changing points and setting dwell on those! And I did a lot of ’em … I worked for a Dodge dealer (mostly selling trucks) when this body style, and the extended cab, came out. Build quality on a lot of those bodies was horrendous. The first ext. cab truck we got, a special order with one of everything checked, came off the truck with panels on the lower cab extension welded 1/4 – 3/8 inch off. I think the customer was ready to cry when he saw that. We had another that the carrier driver dropped on its nose from the upper deck of the trailer. Customer saw than one, too.
