Low Mileage Story: 1966 Porsche 912

912

What a story! This Porsche 912 has been hiding in a garage with less than 28k miles for a long, long time. It’s for sale here on eBay with bidding at just over $4,000 with no reserve as I write this. The 912 is located in Liberal, Kansas. The story goes like this: the second owner bought the car for his daughter, who was involved in a fender-bender. Dad bought the replacement parts, but the body shop did not complete the repair in a timely manner, so he took the car back home – and there it sat. When picked up by the current seller, some relatively minor parts, carpet and trim were missing, but the car still has it’s original engine and transmission and only has three rust spots. I wonder if there’s any way to paint the left front fender to blend it in with the others! Special thanks to Jim S for this tip!

The engine has supposedly been rebuilt, although I’m surprised it would have needed to be. The seller (and I agree) recommends going through the engine before re-installing it. I wonder why the engine’s out, and I’m not sure about the other missing parts, but it sure seems like a solid car if the auction price stays near where it is now. What do you think?

Since it’s an early 912 I’d guess it will end up going well into the 5 figure range, based on my knowledge of how insane Porch-a people are about throwing money at old cars… >_<

I’m also curious as to why the engine was removed if it was just a fender bender. Also, what happened to all the missing pieces?!??

Gonna take one heck of a good painter to blend the fender with the rest of the burned out paint. Obviously you were joking.

Yes, Chuck, I was. Although I have seen some artful things done by good painters ;-)

There is absolutely NO way I will believe the mileage claim. With engine out, plus interior. The headliner look’s like a monkey with a box cutter was let loose inside the car. Plus the rear seat covers don’t match. I’ve never seen them like this. To any new potential buyer, think with your head, not with your heart. I’m seeing lipstick on a pig again.

Looks like a truthful / factual ad at first, but I have my doubts about the car, like OuH8.

It might be truthful from the reseller’s point of view, but I doubt some things like mileage, only 3 rust spots (with no thin/bad metal near these ‘spots’ or elsewhere?).

I think the car has had a longer, harder life than described and will take lots of work & money everywhere. Then there is the rebuilt engine. You can get a rough idea of compression by turning it over by hand but unless you run or disassemble it you are rolling the dice, and there does not seem to be any documentation for an engine rebuild or anything else. 912 experts say these are very expensive engines to rebuild properly. And if true, why a rebuild for less than 28K miles? A hard life maybe?

That said, it’s bid to $5K+ in less than a day with multiple bidders and I’m sure Mark E is right and it will sell for a good 5 figures.

    It’s up to 6600.
odometer reads 27373 cause it only has 5 digits. If it had 6 digits it would read 127373.
So I guess technically he is sorta correct. overall pretty rough for a low miler. Don’t know what they are worth restored or what it would cost to do it but could be a niceproject for somebody with a fat wallet and a love for Porsche.

Jamie, I agree on painting the replacement fender to match. I don’t think it would be that hard! There are plenty of restored red ones. Let’s go for that well used look. As for the rest of the car, I am not usually a skeptic, but I am betting on the miles being rolled over already. The owner just casually states “I believe the miles are original” or something like that. As others stated: the headliner, motor out, etc. To claim that kind of miles, one should be showing close-ups of the pedal wear and many other pieces to try to anchor that assertion. Decent car, but it shows some pretty normal wear -and how does the paint get worn off that thin just sitting in a garage? I don’t think they rolled it out in the driveway and washed it every Sunday?!!

We were right, it was bid to 5 figures, $14,912, but that wasn’t enough for this flipper. Bids cancelled.
