Mid-Size Muscle: 1968 Ford Torino GT

1968 Ford Torino GT

Maybe it’s because I just bought a Torino of my own, but these mid-sized muscle cars have really been drawing my interest lately. There are a bunch on the market right now, including a Cobra, but this humble GT caught my eye. Apparently fastback bodied cars are worth more than my less-common hardtop model. That’s alright by me though because we were able to get a similar car in better condition for less money. The listing states that this one is fitted with a 302-4v and a 4-speed transmission. The vin tells us that it should actually have a 2-barrel carb though. Maybe someone upgraded the intake and carb? Inside you’ll find bucket seats and an aftermarket Hurst shifter. The seller claims that the engine hasn’t run in years, but they are optimistic that someone could restore the car while driving it. The floors will need replaced before that’s going to happen, but it might be a good project if bidding doesn’t get much higher. It’s located in Caledonia, Wisconsin and is listed here on eBay with only a couple days left.

A girl I liked in high school drove one just like this one. She never gave me a second thought. She looked great pulling into the parking lot carrying 3 other popular girls. I always thought of her car as old but when I think about it,the car it would have only been about 8 years old at the time. I think my wife would be totally hot driving it.

This car wouldn’t be too bad of a restoration project especially if you could get it for the right price. With no reserve it could be a deal in the making. If front floorboards are the only bodywork plus paint and I would pull the motor and stroke it to a 331ci go thru the interior and drive it.

Rust on rear left fender — and probably the right one as well — plus rusty door hinges plus rusty floor plus Wisconsin would make me move very carefully on this one. The “replacement” 4V carb (if it is) is not an issue, as long as it was jetted properly. I’d go through a “built” engine with no provenance as to who built it just as a precaution. “Hasn’t run in years” means a brake job is in order, too.

A few weeks’ of work should get it safe and roadworthy, with body and interior to come later as time/money/desire for “restoration” allow. Could be lots o’ fun! In my book, a much better choice than a Mustang II….

I know of a twin to this car that has been sitting for about thirty years. Old guy claims he is gonna restore it. Is such a shame. I hate seeing classics going to ewaste.

Well it’s got a 9″ rear. The eng. looks awfully wide to be a 302. Maybe someone upgraded to a 351W with a duel line Holley carb. The hood scoop say’s 351, but we know 351’s weren’t in production ’til ’69. Maybe someone upgraded the whole car.
Well, it’s a starting point for someone. Wish the buyer and seller luck on this one.
