Muscle Truck: 1970 Ford Ranchero

1970 Ford Ranchero

We would all love to experience the power of a big block muscle car. But, how do you do it on the cheap? Well, one way is to buy the four-door, wagon, or, dare we say it… truck variant of a popular muscle car. Take this 1970 Ford Ranchero for example. It has the looks of the Fairlane and Torino it was based on (at least out front) and is even fitted with the largest engine in the line up – a 429 cubic inch engine with a four barrel carburetor sitting on top! If that doesn’t mean muscle, I dont know what does. The $5,500 asking price here on craigslist doesn’t seem too bad either. In fact, if it were closer, we would be headed out to pick it up right now! Thanks goes to Mark H. for the tip!

Anyone notice that there’s a “spare” 429 included! Darn, I wish this were closer…

My neighbor had one of these but green and it had the 351 Windsor. It was a nice car/truck. Now this one sounds like a screaming deal so I hope there’s something he’s not telling us.

I always thought these were the nicest of the big Ranchero’s. Personally, I’d ditch the big motor( fuel mileage was about 7-8 mpg with these) and get the smallest Ford V-8 I could find, like the 221 ci. from the 60’s.

I had one of these, mine was a GT, with the shark gills, 351C 4V closed chambers heads, 4spd, buckets seats, factory “ribbon” tach. Hide-a-way headlights. By far the car I wish I had back the most. I sold it for a downpayment on a house I bought for the wife that left me. Go figure. I put a big cam in it and it would run. 3.50 traction loc rear end as well.

Many years ago a Boss of mine had a 454 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup, and in the rain these big block vehicles are scary in the rain. Great for towing.

I had a torino the same year and color as this. Have always liked these. Don’t see the ranchero as often as you see El Caminos. At least not in my area. As another bucket list car of mine.

This is the best posted deal for the week. If this is a lifetime N.M. Truck, rust won’t be an issue. Plus, the extra parts! Great weekend hauler here.
