Name That Car: Irish Pub Find

irish-pub-find

Reader Mike G. sent in this photo of a car he spotted behind a pub on the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland. He wasn’t quite sure what it was and didn’t want to get any closer to find out. We would have probably checked inside the pub for leprechauns and asked them… Anyway, we thought this would make a good St. Patty’s Day edition of “name that car”. So, can you guys guess what that green car is? Best o’luck to ya!

    Steve,
Could be a Ford Popular. Hard to tell without seeing the headlights. I know I know, a distinction without much of a difference.

A quick scan of “Ford Prefect” in Google images did not show a single image of a two door in any photo of the 1st and second generation Prefects where the grille is visible in the pic (so you can be sure the photo is not a side view of an Anglia).

The only exceptions were several Australian Ute versions (pickup truck) and a lone tourer. Did Ford make a 2 door sedan version of the Prefect?

103E Ford Popular….painted bumpers and wheel caps give it away. They made them from 1953-1959. Cheapest car available in the UK. Basically 1932 technology of the first UK designed Ford.

I thought the same thing about the bumpers and wheels but then thought possibly they skimped on the restoration and painted rather than rechromed them.

Spot on description, probably the cheapest basic transport of the time, made in great numbers, some companies produced fiberglass sports bodies to fit on the chassis, now many of these cars have been made into Hot rods using a jaguar rear subframe complete & a V8 motor a very common sight at UK car shows.

I vote for Ford Popular, though they are usually black! The Prefect, as I recall, had two side windows for the rear passengers.

Ford Anglia 1939 – 1948 E04A or is it the E494A 1949 – 1953. It looks to have the later bumper bar. However I think the later E494A had bumper guards, also known as over riders.

    Hi.

Its an E493A Ford Popular, the first ones were made after 1936 and the last ones around 1961, they had a 1172cc engine rated at 10HP, comicaly called the sit up and beg by people who owned them.

it’s got the same wheels as my 36 Chevy. And the same basic shape, but the trunk looks a little different. I’m thinking a little older, maybe
