Well this is a bit awkward! It seems the vehicle you would usually use to tow a barn find out of the barn is in need of a tow itself. This 1980’s GMC Tow Truck (the seller doesn’t know what year it is) has clearly been parked in this barn for the last 10 years. It lacks an engine and transmission, so you’ll definitely need a rig to tow it home. It’s going to need a ton of work, but it looks solid and it appears that all of the towing equipment is present. You can find it here on eBay in Rensselaer Falls, New York with a BIN of $2k and bidding starting at $1! How cool would it be to get it back on the road, so you can tow home your other finds with this barn find?
While the seller didn’t offer many good photos, they at least posted a few shots of the tow equipment. I see just about everything you’d need to tow, but I’m going to guess much of it will need to be replaced or restored. That could be an interesting project to undertake. Sadly it isn’t a flatbed, as it would open far more possibilities with the type of projects you could tow home. So do you think this old rig is worth taking on or is it too far gone to be worth the trouble?
You would be better served buying a good tandem (or more) axle tilt deck trailer with a winch to pull behind your pickup……….cheep licence, no smog, no insurance, tows completely off the road, can load with other things like pallets of stuff. Some western states consider a vehicle being towed with axles on the ground to require a license where if they are on a trailer, they do not…….these old boom trucks are seldom used by professionals these days for some of those reasons. Roll backs are the state of the art for common tows. These old boom trucks are obsolete.
how are you going to get that out of there,-
with no steering wheel?
I guess you’ll need a tow truck……
Another issue is it doesn’t look like it has any type of wheel lift. It’s only got the straps and hooks to lift from the front bumper. Something that doesn’t work real well a lot of cars. For the condition it’s in and the amount of work required I think this is the pass even for the low price.
I see on the fender it says” Not For Hire”. As rough as this truck is, it should read “Set On Fire”.
Looks like an ’82 3500. Let it sit. Everything is rollback now. Can’t even get a dollar for it. I suppose the light bar is worth something.
The winch is worth a few bucks…………
someone bid .99 cents for it! is with or without all the bird poop? is the interior also laden with poop? sure looks like it, yuck!
yes, the seller should have some class, at least remove the blue solo cup off the dash Truck is in NYS, most likely a ton of rust underneath , no engine, or tranny , Possibly a 454/400 transplant? at least hose the danged thing off and get it out in the open
Did anyone notice the bow-tie / Chevrolet sticker is on the inside of the rear window? The only way to read it properly is to look in the rear-view mirror. Maybe looking through the windshield once the glass is all cleaned. I love seeing that kind of stuff. LOL
Sling wreckers are almost obsolete these days.
