Never Seen One: Porsche GT1 Replica

We all know that buying a Porsche factory race car is an opportunity limited to those who have bank accounts that hang out with guys like Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos. Sad but true. But as the world keeps on spinning, it should come as little surprise that replicas and kit cars keep getting better as well. This is the first Porsche GT1 replica I’ve seen, and while it is clearly a copy, it’s still a compelling alternative to attempting to buy the real thing. Like all kit cars, the proportions are still goofy, but at least this one is based on an actual Porsche. The GT1 replica also wears (fake) livery that mimics what the actual Porsche team cars wore. Find this GT1 replica here on craigslist for $65,000 in South Florida.

From the rear, it actually looks even better in terms of its ability to fool passers-by into believing this is an actual GT1. To me, this is one of Porsche’s most iconic race cars, especially among what was made over the last 25 years. I also liked the 993 Cup racers, but the GT1 was a brand new, built from the ground up race car that blew away the competition when it was introduced. Porsche built a few road-going versions to comply with homologation requirements at the time, and those cars come up for sale every once in a great while. The Carrera GT may get a lot of shine in the automotive press and at auction, but I’d take a road-going version of the GT1 or the Mercedes GTR over one of those any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

While I was prepared to be disappointed by the interior, I’m actually not. If I’m reading the listing correctly in that it indicates the body was draped over an actual 1983 911SC with a manual transmission, then it would make sense that this looks like a real-deal Porsche under the skin. There are plenty of differences, mind you, but at least it’s not a Pontiac Fiero inside. The interior features genuine Corbeau racing seats, but the rubber floormats likely wouldn’t have been found in the actual track car. The steering wheel needs to go, as that’s not in keeping with the race-spec model and it also just looks pretty cheap. The dash is somewhat haggard in places, and the interior is where I’d spend some time making improvements so it more closely resembled the high-impact exterior.

Now, I can make exceptions for replicas, especially with high-cost features like the reverse-clamshell engine cover found on the GT1 (actually, the whole panel could be lifted up and off for easier engine access if needed.) The seller’s car actually integrates this feature, which is pretty amazing – maybe I’m out of touch, but I don’t recall seeing replica supercars going this far in their attempt to pay homage to the car that can cost well into the millions. The first photo is really the one that leaves me most puzzled as to how good this GT1 looks in person, but if you’re not a fan of the racing livery, don’t worry – it’s a wrap you can remove and expose sedate, silver paint underneath.

An 83 911 is a pretty nice car, good looking too. Why would you do this? Do the world a favor, do not buy this. We need to start setting examples for people who lack obvious good taste.

Interior looks used up, wheel well cutouts look like an afterthought, and like mentioned, a perfectly good car was cut up to make it ugly.

Is the pipe insulation knee bolster on the passenger side supposed to be an attractive feature? And not one or two, but four pics of the crappy Corbeau seats will surely make someone fork over their cash!

    First of all… because Florida.

Secondly, I love the GT1 and this tribute is pretty cool. But the donor should really have been a 996 as the GT1 was watercooled, not aircooled. (The GT1 had a 962 watercooled twin turbo engine). In a way it’s too bad an SC was sacrificed for this project but in the end, there are still plenty of SCs…

They say it was in a movie, was the movie How Not To Build A Kit Car? They have the back open but do not show the engine.

I was confused AF by this. But then as soon as I read the “…in South Florida” part, it all made sense.

Cool one of a kind car. Probably much cheaper than the real car.

Wow, the proportions are WAY off from the actual GT1 car… yikes.
