It’s not clear if the proper question here is, “How desperate are you to own a 1969 Pontiac GTO convertible?” Or, “How much are you willing to risk on a car you can’t see ninety percent of?” in terms of a restoration. This might be a nice car someday, but that’s a long haul down a dark road. If you want to start on it, you can pony up $6500 here on ebay and then find a way to get your biggest trailer to Port Huron, Michigan to collect up the car, some doors, other parts, and even a spare engine, if you want to spend an extra thousand bucks helping this seller empty out his farm shed. Or, after reading the ad carefully, you can offer him the $6K that he says he wants. Or less. Perhaps much less.
You’ll have the classic project. It’s halfway undone, nowhere near redone, and in an absolute shambles. Look at the engine, the heads torn from the block, which the seller says he assumes is original. You need a bell housing to run the transmission, right? Well, good thing there’s one lying on the ground underneath the front of the car. What there isn’t is a rear axle. Is this what used to be known as a “parts car”? Remember those? They were beyond fixing, so they were cannibalized to make other cars live on. Later, they went to the crusher. Now, with the hobby having awakened to the fact that the barns are emptying, almost anything that has a VIN, and especially something as desirable as a “goat,” suddenly has value.
The thing is, looking at the first picture, you can almost make yourself believe you could resurrect this car. After all, it’s got patina dripping off of its hood. The grille looks good, with the GTO emblem letters intact. So what that the two headlights on each side are punched out, rusty holes where the bulbs used to be? That’s just pot metal, and likely reproduced. Keep looking, buster.
Well, at least it’s not rusty. Not in the photos, anyway. But read the description to the end. Needs trunk floor and typical floor work. What’s typical depends upon where you drive a car. I’m guessing a combination of Kentucky and Northern Michigan did this one in. It also needs quarters, a hood and two doors, which are supplied. The trunk lid is good—at least you’ve got that. But vast areas of this vehicle are full of rot. Heck, you don’t even know that it’s not going to break in half when you try to jack it up enough to get some tires on it and remove it from the place where it probably thought it had gone to die.

As a young montrealer, i had the opportunity to buy and sell many rustbuckets , i also had the chance to own many muscle cars and one that i never had was this exact car, i always looked for a 69 vert but they were all overpriced rustbuckets like this one …
The labor to do this right is either gone or priced out of logic so , its a pass for me

I have observed a ’70 Malibu sitting uncovered, in a local yard for the 6 yrs I have lived here, and I’ve come to the understanding that it has sat in the same spot for at least 10 yrs before I saw it…..not bad condition from 100 ft away..but it will be ,soon. Very sad

You best be a Class A technician, body man and have $50,000 limit on your VISA to even start this project. I am all for saving GTOs, but this is a waste of time.

Okay it is a convertible and it is an A/C car. There is nothing there that cannot be replaced or fixed. Granted it may take two to three years and 80 to 100 thousand dollars, but if that’s what it takes and you are that motivated
and your pockets are that deep it could happen. $6500 seems high in my book though even considering what it was or could be. I would go as high as say $600 and the seller should thank me for that. Good luck to whom ever has the need to go down that rabbit hole.
I think the offer I seen on here for $600 is about $350 to much. I say 350 but of course the other 250 one could get back from the local scrap yard. I can’t get over what people try to get out of junk these days you got to have money to burn just to buy a muscle car and then you still have to pay 50 to 150 thousand to restore it, i guess thats why some just get a old 4 door chevelle or a malibu wagon or something of that nature but then again they want ridiculous money for those also now. Hey while I’m on here complaining about others prices I have a 78 olds Cutlass with a 76 l82 bored 30 over it needs a tranny a little body work not a lot just a few silver dollar size rust holes behind the back wheelsinterior is pretty good no holes or rips needs headliner but I’ll take the first 15.000 lol.if someone buys this GTO for 6500 I shouldn’t have a problem getting 15.000.
Yes,alittle high for a part’s car,or at least, l guess they are selling it as part’s car,they show no interest in providing a bill of sale, and it’s kinda rough, so it might not be worth it,l think l would stay away from this one, two other cars out there.

Been playing this game many years and this is junk weather it says GTO or whatever.
Reality… If you’re going to pay 6500 say another 1000 to ship. Then another minimal 70k + to restore … Your going to break 80000 easily. For a car that might be worth 55 to 60.
Unless you want to brag about a money pit. ?? But some are just crusher bait. And this is a prime example. Even if you got it free… It’s a really bad investment.
Another junkyard refugee that some CAR person pulled from its grave site where it no doubt went when it was a tired, rusted, unwanted, old car. Junkyards were loaded with crap like this a decade or so ago. What’s left, very little, as not one piece will be untouched by nature.
Way back in the dark ages (When I was a teenager), I used to see GTOs in waaay better shape than this one in the wrecking yards…and much more intact than this one. No sale! 👎👎
