No Reserve: 1977 Ford F150 Short Bed 4×4

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Ford was into the fifth year of their popular sixth-generation F-Series design when this 1977 F150 rolled off the assembly line. Sales literature promised ’77 Fords as being “Tough trucks made tougher” and went on to list a bunch of reasons why from the two forged-steel I-Beam front axles to a new range of anti-rust features including rustproof fender liners and zinc-coated sheetmetal. Here’s a nice-looking 45-year-old Ford F150 Custom Short Bed 4×4 that’s located in Tacoma, Washington and is for sale here on eBay at No Reserve. As of this writing, nine bids had been submitted with the current bid sitting at $8,800.

The seller doesn’t share this ’77 F150’s history, background, and what it’s been up to since Star Wars was released. Given the truck’s stance (it would take this old man a mini trampoline to get into the front seat) and a few other clues, this F150 has had a younger owner or two. It was painted Wimbledon White around 12 years ago and it looks presentable. Based on the photos (and there are quite a number of them), the body looks solid with no major dents or any rust visible. The bed also looks good with no rust issues and appears to have been used for light work. The trucks original chrome front bumper has been replaced, the rear step-type bumper looks good as do the Lemans A/T tires and chrome wheels. I like the proportions of this short bed and with its stance, tires, and chrome wheels, it looks flat-out cool.

The interior is in good overall shape for a 45-year-old truck. The F150 Custom trim level came in five vinyl colors: black, red, tan, blue, or jade green. I would personally replace the current gray velour seat (that is worn and has holes in the upper headrest area) with the correct black vinyl bench seat. The original black door panels look good and I’m guessing the black carpet isn’t original. An aftermarket Kenwood AM/FM radio has been added as well as two ceiling-mounted round speakers, and the cabin is also sporting a rifle rack and dash cover.

In 1977, Ford F150’s came standard with a 300-cubic inch six, but also offered four V8 options ranging from 302 to 460 cubic inches. This truck’s power plant is one of the two new V8’s introduced in 1977: the 351-cubic inch V8 that generated 160 horsepower when new. It’s paired with a floor-shift manual transmission. The seller says the original 351 “sounds and runs good” and that the F150 “drives and stops good” as well. Although short bed 4×4’s aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, this is a cool-looking truck that appears to be in very good shape. I’m guessing the next owner is going to enjoy it on the road as well as off. And, with no reserve, it could be a good deal. Happy Bidding!

Decent looking truck, though the 351 is nothing to get excited about-it’s the first year 400M, destroked just to have a 351 ci engine in the F. Truck lineup.
I’ve one in my ‘79 F150 and it’s adequate for hauling junk to the dump or taking tumbleweeds etc to the “back 40”(well actually the back 5 but who’s counting other than the county assessor..).
I like this truck especially with a stick and grillwork as posed to my ‘79.
I’m not sure how much higher it’ll go NOW, whereas last year it’d already be in the 5 digit category since the market is bouncing like it does..

Looks like a pretty good example of a good truck. That seat would have to go, God only knows where that thing came from. I would probably lose the front winch bumper, I’m not that adventurous anymore. For those seeking a bit more “poop” from the 351M, there’s an array of performance items available, these motors have some potential, after all, they’re related to the Cleveland. Note to the writer, the 460 was only available in 2WD trucks during the 70s.

This is months old now but…. I had 77 351 shorted. Would love another ! I don’t believe the 302 was an option or I would have got it since I ordered my truck. I also ordered a new 79 F250 302 not offered, 300 6 only with posi rear end. I soon swapped engines it for my neighbors 351.. I put a crane rv cam crane lifters and advance the crank with 4° off-set keyway. Added a holley 450 carb. I increased my power and went from 10-12mpg up to 14-15mpg !

Nice truck. It’s got a easy rider rifle rack to boot.

Nice truck and good write up. 351/400M is a smog motor. No point in doing much to them. 460 is a bolt in swap. Had a 351M. Totally rebuilt it at 54k- then sold it. Happiest days of my life were the day I bought it, and the day I sold it.

My first 4×4, and also my first new vehicle, was a ’77 F150 SWB like this one, complete with a 351M V8 and the 4-speed tranny. 1st gear was “granny low”. Mine was silver and had a woven vinyl bench front seat. It had an AM radio & I took the FM/ cassette player out of my ’66 Chevy C10 and put it in the Ford.

The sticker price in February 1977 was $6300 and the dealer allowed me $1300 trade-in on my Chevy, which had 80,000 miles on it. I financed $5000 for 36 months. Payments were about $163.

Wish I still had that one. :)

Gil, I ordered one from Seelye Ford. Delivered in May 1977 351M 4 speed. Had a blast in that truck !
I’m sure the 302 was Not available or I would have ordered it, since the 351M was new. $5200 otd !
    My next purchase was a new 79 F250 300 ci dog,4 speed stick . I transplanted a 351M a few years later. After a 4° crank o/s keyway, crane RV cam n lifters and a holley 450 mechanical. I was getting 15 mpg ! Up from 10 !
