The two-tone era of GM trucks is perhaps one of the more memorable design phases the company ever went through, and it can certainly make even a tired truck look fresher than it really is. This 1979 Chevrolet Blazer 4×4 runs and drives and has 113,000 original miles according to the seller, who has listed it on behalf of his fiance’s brother. The owner can no longer drive the Blazer due to disabilities, and it sounds like this truck is a worthwhile project to save once you sort out some isolated rust repair. The Blazer wears the upscale Cheyenne trim, and is listed here on eBay with bids to $10,800 and no reserve.
The red-and-white two-tone paint job is a respray, so if you’re wondering why a truck with rust looks so good, there’s your answer. The good news is the rust seems isolated to a common trouble spot rather than being indicative of a bigger issue; the listing claims the rust has blossomed where the running boards meet the body, which isn’t exactly a surprise. Still, this Blazer is in New Mexico, where we wouldn’t expect to see those vulnerable areas like the running board mounts be as much of a problem as other parts of the country. The interior is in decent shape for a desert truck, with only minimal splitting in the upholstery. The dashboard is cracked, but it shouldn’t take too much sleuthing to find a good one.
The white rally wheels and CB antenna mounted on the rear quarter panel are sort of “must-haves” on a square body truck like this, along with tires that have some meatier tread than the stock rollers. The tires are dry rotted and need replacing, so now’s a good time for an upgrade! Blazers of this vintage came with a removable soft top which looks to be in very good condition here. The standard 350 engine is paired to a four-bolt main and is said to run well with no issues disclosed, and the seller reports that despite the bum tires, the Blazer still drives and tracks true and feels “tight.” That’s obviously a subjective quality, but we’ve all experienced vintage vehicles that feel this way (and those that don’t), so I don’t dismiss that descriptor.
The interior gets better the further back you go, with a near-mint rear bench seat still installed. The Chevy is equipped with power steering and power brakes, and the seller adds that it comes with the original floor mats. The cabin is definitely a highlight of the whole truck, as a repaint can sometimes hide flaws and the presence of rust is always a concern, but an unrestored cabin that still looks this good is definitely encouraging. Throw in the fact that the air conditioning still works and it becomes even more of a home run. Aside from wanting a close-up picture of the rust area, I see little that should stop a Blazer shopper from bidding on this no-preserve project.
This looks good ,you are correct about leaving CB antenna,if it didn’t have one l would have no problem drilling a hole in that rust free panel to add one.
‘78 and ‘79 were the two BEST years for GM 4×4 trucks. All the defects from the previous years were resolved and you could still get HD suspension, 4-bolt mains and an engine that wasn’t choked to death. The last year for the NP 203 transfer case as well. While the quality control was still up in subsequent years you could still see a trend toward tightening regulations. Emissions got tighter; vehicles got lighter and the price kept going up. I saw a change between ‘79 and ‘80 and I wouldn’t have changed my ‘79 for anything newer. It was downhill with a tailwind after that. If this is bone stock you will be hard pressed to find anything better. Buy it!
The CB antenna is a 70s badge of honor
There is a lot of rust bubbling under the paint. Over rear tires and bottom of fenders. Rockers are shot. Need a lot of work.
Looks like a crate motor, so not numbers matching.
Sold for $13,022 . Alot of parts to replace and alot of work to do it. $3,000 and no more. Lift the carpet nd I sure you,ll find holes in the floor. I,d have to look it over good .Before I,d think about buying it. The shiney paint fooled someone, but you can see the paint bubbled out and it has rust issues.
