Original 383! 1966 Dodge Charger

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The popularity of the Dodge Charger began shifting into high gear when the second generation cars were introduced in 1968, but the ’66 and ’67 models were what really got the ball rolling in that direction.  With that cool fastback styling, the first-generation cars are quite distinctive, and like their second-generation counterparts, well-cared-for and unmolested examples are getting harder to come by.  The seller of this 1966 Dodge Charger calls his car a prime example, and it’s hard to argue that he’s not on the right track when you start to look closely, so if you’ve been in the market for an inaugural year Charger this one would definitely be worth checking out.  The B-Body is located in Dickinson, Texas, and can be found here on eBay where bidding has reached $17,500 so far, but it’s gonna take more than that to make it yours as the reserve has not yet been reached.

The base engine in the first-year Charger was a 318, but the good news here is that this car is equipped with a 383, and the seller says it’s the original motor.  The car’s mileage is listed as 12,924, but nothing else is mentioned about it, so I’d say there’s a reasonably good chance it’s rolled over.  If it hasn’t, this may be one of the lowest mileage ’66 examples remaining.  Everything looks tidy and in good order under the hood, and the big block is claimed to start easily and run great with no knocks or smoke.  Nothing is mentioned about the state of the automatic transmission.

The paint is said to show nicely, but no word on whether or not the finish is original or if it’s had a respray at some point.  Either way, the body looks exceptionally nice, with no obvious signs of rust or repairs and the gaps seem to be spot-on just about all the way around.  The chrome pieces are stated to look awesome, and the hideaway headlights are said to be functioning as they should.  It’s also kind of refreshing to see one of these cars wearing hubcaps and whitewall tires.

There’s really not a whole lot inside to find too much fault with either, other than just the normal wear that the owner points out.  The gauges are original and all are stated to be working, and for those not familiar with the debut Charger’s interior, you got a really long console with 4 bucket seats.  The backs of those rear seats folded forward, so if there were only 2 passengers you could have a really nice cargo area back there.

The seller has owned the Charger for about a year, and although we don’t get a whole lot more information about the car’s past he does claim to have lots of receipts and documents, including the original dealer ID tag.  The only thing mentioned about the car’s underside is that it’s clean down below, but things inside the trunk area are said to be in great shape, with the original spare still in place.  This one seems to be an overall really well-kept example with quite a bit of originality still left in it.  What are your thoughts on this 1966 Dodge Charger?  Any ideas on where the seller may have set the reserve?

I always thought these were attractive looking cars. Interior design is unusual. I am sure most people 60 and up have used a back seat for……. Here lies the problem with this car, no back seat! I know it sounds trivial but think about it. Had to affect sales.

They have back seats! They fold down under that big piece of glass to create a nice storage area.

My father had a brand new 1966 and we used to ride around with the seats down on that loop-pile carpet.

It was quite an amazing interior for its time.

Clay, how did you come up with that? They say Charger in red on them.

I pulled up the EBay ad and saw it on the drivers side in the close up picture through the driver’s door. It is a Mustang Pony image for sure. I noticed it is not in the interior shot here on Barn Finds.

One of my first cars. Same color in and out but mine had a 318 which eventually blew. Was a ball to drive and it was fun while it lasted. One of the coolest dash illumination setups ever devised.
Sold it as a roller for
$100. I showing my age. Lol

I had to look twice- when I lived in Eureka (CA),
there was one just like this in a carport in our neighborhood.
The owner bought it new,but passed away a few years back.
I’m sure there was a list of people waiting to buy it.I’m
    curious where it’s ended up.

I had a yellow one in high school, was a three on the tree! Loved that car, was perfect for me, spent a lot of evenings with those seats folded down and a sleeping bag.

Wish I had room for this, I would buy in a second!

I bought one of these used as my first car when I was 14 for $1500 in 1978 and had to wait 2 years to drive it,the guages were pretty cool, I drove it half way across Canada,It had the 383 and in a town about an hour from me a guy had one with the hemi, once I raced a 66 Parisienne with a 396 4 speed and it smoked my pride and joy .
